Heat Stress Management: Protecting Livestock During Indian Summers

0

As temperatures soar across the Indian subcontinent, the dairy sector faces a silent productivity killer: Heat Stress. High-yielding crossbred cows and buffaloes are particularly sensitive to thermal discomfort. When a bovine’s body temperature rises above its comfort zone, milk production can drop by 10% to 30%, and conception rates plummet. For a dairy farmer, managing the micro-climate of the shed is just as important as the feed.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke in Cattle

A vigilant farmer must recognize the early signs of heat stress. These include open-mouth breathing (panting), excessive salivation, reduced feed intake, and an unusual increase in water consumption. If a cow is standing while others are lying down, or if the herd is huddling around water troughs, it is a clear sign that the animals are struggling to cool down.

During summer, the “Heat Increment” of digestion should be minimized. Farmers should shift feeding times to the cooler parts of the day—early morning and late evening. Increasing the energy density of the ration by adding bypass fats and reducing high-fiber fodder can help. Additionally, supplementing the diet with electrolytes and Vitamin C helps maintain the mineral balance lost through panting.

Housing and Ventilation Improvements

The shed design plays a pivotal role. Thatch roofs or asbestos sheets painted white can reflect sunlight effectively. Installing misting systems or foggers combined with high-speed fans can reduce the ambient temperature inside the shed by 5°C to 8°C. However, foggers should only be used in well-ventilated sheds to avoid high humidity, which can worsen the stress.

Summer management is about proactive care. By ensuring 24/7 access to clean, cool drinking water and providing a shaded, ventilated environment, farmers can ensure that their livestock remains healthy and profitable even in the peak of June.
