Modern Animal Husbandry: How to Maximize Profit from Dairy and Livestock Farming in 2026

0

Modern Animal Husbandry: Animal husbandry has been an integral part of Indian agriculture for centuries. Today, it contributes nearly 30% of the total agricultural GDP. With rising demand for milk, meat, eggs, and wool, livestock farming has become one of the most profitable ventures for rural households. However, success in animal husbandry depends on choosing the right breeds, proper feeding, timely healthcare, and using modern management practices.

Choosing the Right Breed

One of the most important decisions in dairy farming is selecting the right breed of cattle. For milk production, the Holstein Friesian and Jersey breeds are known for high yield — producing 20 to 30 liters of milk per day under good management. Among indigenous breeds, the Gir cow from Gujarat has gained international fame for producing A2 milk, which commands a premium price in the market. For buffalo farming, Murrah and Surti breeds are the top choices due to their high fat content milk.

Scientific Feeding for Higher Yields

Many farmers still rely on traditional feeding practices, which often result in poor production. Scientific feeding involves a balanced diet of green fodder, dry fodder, concentrates, and mineral mixtures. A high-yielding cow needs at least 25-30 kg of green fodder, 5-7 kg of dry fodder, and 2-3 kg of concentrate feed per day. Mineral mixtures prevent common deficiencies and improve milk fat content significantly.

Healthcare and Disease Prevention

Prevention is always better than cure in animal husbandry. Regular vaccination against diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Brucellosis, and Hemorrhagic Septicemia is essential. Deworming every three months keeps the animals healthy and productive. Setting up a proper deworming and vaccination calendar with the help of a local veterinarian is a must for every serious livestock farmer.

Housing and Hygiene

Proper housing protects animals from extreme weather and disease. The shed should have good ventilation, clean drinking water, and proper drainage for waste. Clean and dry bedding reduces the risk of mastitis in dairy animals. Biogas plants can also be set up using cattle dung, providing free fuel and organic manure for the farm.

Value Addition: Beyond Raw Milk

Selling raw milk limits your income. Value addition through making curd, ghee, paneer, and butter can multiply your earnings. Many self-help groups (SHGs) and dairy cooperatives like Amul support farmers in processing and selling value-added dairy products. Setting up a small dairy processing unit at the village level with government subsidy is a very viable option today.

Government Support for Livestock Farmers

The National Livestock Mission, Rashtriya Gokul Mission, and Kisan Credit Card scheme offer significant financial support for animal husbandry. Subsidies on breed improvement, insurance for animals, and low-interest loans are all available. Farmers should visit their nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) or District Animal Husbandry Department office to know about available schemes.

Animal husbandry, when done scientifically, can be a steady and highly rewarding source of income for farming families throughout the year.
