Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the farming community for approving a ₹38,000 crore fertiliser subsidy under a recent Cabinet decision chaired by the Prime Minister. The subsidy, aimed at supporting farmers during the current agricultural season, is expected to significantly ease input costs and promote sustainable crop productivity across the country.
Strong Kharif Sowing and Promising Outlook
During a high-level review meeting on the progress of the agriculture sector, Shri Chouhan reported that sowing during the Kharif 2025 season has been highly encouraging.
The total sown area for paddy has reached 441.58 lakh hectares, marking an increase over the previous year. The area under oilseeds stands at 190.13 lakh hectares, with soybean and groundnut being the dominant crops. Meanwhile, pulses have been sown on 120.41 lakh hectares, a crucial step toward achieving nutritional security.
The sugarcane area, too, has expanded to 59.07 lakh hectares, directly benefiting sugarcane growers and associated industries.
Favourable Monsoon and Water Availability
India’s agriculture sector has witnessed a strong performance this year, supported by favourable weather conditions, adequate rainfall, and improved reservoir storage across key regions.
Shri Chouhan noted that most major reservoirs are currently at normal or above-normal levels, ensuring sufficient irrigation water for both ongoing Kharif crops and the upcoming Rabi season. The consistent soil moisture has aided crop growth and is expected to contribute to expanded Rabi sowing areas.
According to Agriculture Commissioner Dr. P.K. Singh, the total live storage in 161 reservoirs across the country stands at 165.58 billion cubic metres (BCM) — 104.30% of last year’s level and 115.95% of the ten-year average.
Harvesting of Kharif crops has already begun in some regions, covering about 27% of the total Kharif area, while Rabi sowing has started in early phases. The condition of onion, potato, and tomato crops remains satisfactory, and the current stock of rice and wheat is well above buffer norms.
Focus on Farmers and Food Security
Shri Chouhan highlighted that India’s agriculture sector is achieving record milestones, driven by favourable monsoon conditions, efficient planning, digital innovations, and farmer-friendly government policies.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue supporting farmers through timely interventions and improved infrastructure. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, these initiatives are enhancing farmer livelihoods and strengthening national food security,” he said.
The central government, in coordination with states, will extend comprehensive support to boost pulses and oilseeds production in the upcoming Rabi season, ensuring sustainable growth and resilience in India’s agriculture sector.
