Farm Mechanisation Expands Through Custom Hiring Centres

0

Farm mechanisation is increasing in India through Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs). These centres provide farm equipment on rent.

Small and marginal farmers often cannot afford to buy tractors or harvesters. CHCs allow them to use machines at lower cost.

The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization supports these centres through subsidies and training.

CHCs provide tools such as tractors, seed drills, rotavators, and harvesters. Farmers can rent equipment based on need.

This helps in timely operations such as sowing and harvesting. Delays in these stages can affect yield.

States like Punjab, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu have expanded CHC networks. Usage is also increasing in eastern states.

Mobile-based booking systems are being introduced in some regions. Farmers can check availability and book equipment in advance.

Labour shortages drive mechanisation demand

Rural labour shortages during peak seasons have increased demand for machines. Migration patterns and alternative employment options affect labour availability.

Mechanisation helps reduce dependence on manual labour. It also improves precision in operations like seed placement.

Government data shows gradual growth in farm power availability per hectare. This reflects increased use of machinery.

Farmers using CHCs report savings in labour costs. A farmer in Bihar, cited in a state agriculture report, said mechanised sowing reduced time and improved crop uniformity.

Rental costs vary depending on equipment and location. Still, they remain lower than ownership costs.

Challenges include limited availability during peak demand and maintenance issues.

The expansion of CHCs is improving access to technology. It is helping small farmers adopt mechanisation without large investment.
