A cactus that blooms at night, needs hand pollination in the dark, and earns farmers up to ₹300 a kilogram has quietly become one of the most talked-about crops in India’s northeastern hills. Dragon fruit — named Kamalam by Gujarat’s then Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in 2021, after the lotus it resembles — is no longer just a tropical curiosity. It is turning into a commercial crop with serious economic potential for farmers across Tripura, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
Researchers at the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region have now published a detailed cultivation guide for the region, calling dragon fruit “an economical, high value fruit crop” with yields of up to 85 tonnes per hectare and a farm-gate price that ranges between ₹200 and ₹300 per kilogram.
Those numbers are hard to ignore.
What Is Dragon Fruit?
Dragon fruit — scientific name Hylocereus spp., family Cactaceae — originates in southern Mexico and Central and South America. European missionaries introduced it to Southeast Asia in the 19th century. Today, Vietnam, China, Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United States are the world’s major producers.
Vietnam alone grows 1.4 million tonnes of dragon fruit across 55,000 hectares, with productivity ranging from 22 to 35 tonnes per hectare. Around 80 percent of Vietnam’s dragon fruit goes to China.
India entered the picture in the late 1990s. Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra lead domestic production. India’s total area under dragon fruit now stands at 14,510 hectares, with production reaching 53,720 metric tonnes. The government plans to expand that to 50,000 hectares. The northeast — with its high humidity, suitable temperatures, and growing demand for high-value horticulture — is now firmly part of that expansion plan.
India already exports dragon fruit to Qatar, the Maldives, and Saudi Arabia. China, Europe, and the United States are the major global import markets.
Why Northeast India?
The northeastern hill region offers conditions that suit dragon fruit cultivation. The crop grows well in tropical and subtropical climates, tolerates a wide rainfall range — from 500 mm in dry Baramati, Maharashtra, to 2,500 mm in Tripura — and adapts to temperatures between 6°C and 20°C in winter and 25°C to 40°C in summer.
The plant uses a photosynthesis mechanism called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism, or CAM, which closes its pores during the day to limit water loss. This makes it more drought-tolerant than most fruit crops — an advantage in areas with uneven rainfall.
The soil requirements are flexible. Dragon fruit grows in all soil types, but performs best in loose, well-drained sandy to loam soils with a pH between 5.0 and 7.0. Waterlogging around the base of the plant damages the roots, so drainage management is critical.
Biswajit Das, scientist at ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Tripura Centre, and lead author of the cultivation study, has underscored the crop’s suitability for the region. “Dragon fruit has been found an economical, high value fruit crop for north eastern India,” Das states in the research. “The farmers can get higher yield and income by the adoption of good agricultural practices.”
India cultivates four main dragon fruit species, distinguished by skin and flesh colour.
Hylocereus polyrhizus has red skin and red flesh. Hylocereus costaricensis has red skin and purple flesh. Hylocereus undatus — the most widely known globally — has red skin and white flesh. Hylocereus megalanthus has yellow skin and white flesh.
Red-fleshed varieties dominate consumer preference in India. The most commercially planted varieties are Moroccan Red, Jumbo Red, and Vietnam Red. Pink-fleshed varieties have higher levels of phenolics and flavonoids — 40 to 60 mg GAE and 20 to 40 mg CE per 100 grams — compared to 15 to 20 mg GAE in white-fleshed types.
Planting: Poles, Spacing, and Timing
Dragon fruit is a climbing cactus. It cannot stand on its own. Every commercial plantation requires a support structure — typically a concrete pole six to seven feet tall and four to six inches in diameter, with a motorcycle tyre fixed on top to support the spreading branches.
Each pole costs approximately ₹500 to ₹600. Four plants are planted per pole, one from each direction, at 30 centimetres from the base. Standard spacing runs at 2 metres by 2 metres or 3 metres by 3 metres, plant to plant and row to row.
Planting happens between July and August, using rooted stem cuttings 15 to 25 centimetres long, collected from healthy mother plants. Cuttings take five to eight months to be field-ready. Nursery plants sell for ₹50 to ₹60 each — and with demand running high across states, nursery operation alone is a viable income source.
Rooting medium is a mix of soil, sand, and vermicompost in a 3:1:1 ratio. Cuttings are treated with fungicides including carbendazim and mancozeb, or with Trichoderma formulations, to prevent soil-borne infections before planting.
Dragon fruit is a heavy feeder. Its tap root is absent; it relies entirely on shallow adventitious roots that run close to the soil surface, making frequent, split-dose fertilisation essential.
A standardised Integrated Nutrient Management schedule starts with organic agents — VAM (Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae) at 50 grams per plant and Azotobacter formulation at 50 grams per plant — applied at planting time alongside farm yard manure and vermicompost.
By the time a plant reaches three years of age and full bearing potential, the recommended dose per plant per quarter is 143 grams of urea, 138 grams of MOP, and 52 grams of SSP, plus 11 kilograms of farm yard manure and 12 kilograms of vermicompost. This is applied in five split doses annually, timed to the fruiting flushes between May and September.
Foliar sprays of nitrogen and phosphorus at 2 grams per litre are applied in January and August. Three micronutrient sprays — zinc at 0.1 percent and boron at 0.5 percent — are timed to the three main fruiting stages in June, July, and August.
Pollination Problem — and the Opportunity
Dragon fruit flowers open between 7 and 9 at night. They are hermaphrodite but structurally distylous — the male parts sit below the female stigma, so pollen from the same flower cannot reach its own stigma. In nature, bats pollinate the flowers after dark. In commercial plantations, farmers cannot rely on bats alone.
Hand pollination, carried out between 7:30 and 8:30 in the evening, is critical for reliable fruit set. Farmers collect pollen with a fine brush and transfer it to the stigma surface of other flowers. Pollinated flowers close the next morning, and fruit development begins.
This nightly ritual — unusual by any agricultural standard — adds labour cost and demands farmer discipline. But it also guarantees fruit set in ways that bat-dependent pollination cannot.
When and How Much Farmers Earn
Dragon fruit bears fruit in three to four flushes between June and October. Fruits mature 35 to 40 days after flowering. An unripe fruit is deep green; it turns reddish-pink as it ripens. Harvest is done when the skin and bracts turn fully red.
Average fruit weight runs between 300 and 400 grams, with a TSS — total soluble solids, a measure of sweetness — of 13 to 14 degrees Brix. Dragon fruit is non-climacteric, meaning it does not ripen after harvest. Farmers must time the pick correctly. Shelf life is 7 to 20 days.
Yield per pole ranges from 25 to 35 kilograms. At the planting density of 2 metres by 2 metres, that translates to 62 to 85 tonnes per hectare. At a farm-gate price of ₹200 to ₹300 per kilogram, a well-managed hectare generates gross revenue between ₹1.24 crore and ₹2.55 crore annually at peak production.
Total establishment cost per hectare — covering land preparation, 2,500 concrete poles, 10,000 plants, tyres, fertiliser, irrigation, and cultural operations — runs to approximately ₹25.5 lakh.
Diseases to Watch
Dragon fruit was initially considered pest and disease resistant. That is no longer the case.
Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum species, infects both stems and fruits. Incidence in northeastern plantations varies from 10 to 60 percent, severe enough to kill plants. Stem canker, caused by Neoscytalidium dimidiatum, has also been reported in India.
Cactus Virus X produces yellowish spots on stems, dries out tissue, and stunts and malforms fruits. Pruning tools must be sterilised with alcohol between plants to prevent spread. Cut ends must be treated immediately with a copper-based fungicide paste.
Insect pests include mealybugs, aphids, mites, fruit flies, and termites. The lesson for northeast farmers entering this crop for the first time is straightforward: treat dragon fruit as a managed crop from day one, not a self-sustaining one.
The northeastern hill region sits at an inflection point in horticulture. Farmers are looking beyond traditional crops for higher-value alternatives that suit the terrain, the rainfall, and the growing domestic and export demand for nutritious fruit.
Dragon fruit — immune-boosting, antioxidant-rich, carrying 270 to 400 mg of potassium and up to 150 micrograms of vitamin E per 100 grams — fits that picture. Tripura, Mizoram, and Nagaland have already started commercial cultivation. The science is now documented. The market is proven.
What remains is the discipline to get the agronomy right, night by night, flush by flush.
