Agriculture and Farming Technology Updates

Bihar becomes a hub for banana cultivation, tissue culture farming boosts farmers’ income

0

The state of Bihar has made remarkable progress in the agricultural sector through continuous innovation and government initiatives. The transformation in banana cultivation, in particular, has made the state a leader in fruit cultivation. While total production was 5.45 lakh metric tons in 2004-05, it has increased to 19.68 lakh metric tons in 2022-23. During this period, the area under banana cultivation also increased from 27,200 hectares to 42,900 hectares.

Agriculture Road Map and the Role of Tissue Culture Technique

This remarkable growth is attributed to the state government’s Agriculture Road Map policy and scientific tissue culture farming techniques. Banana varieties like G-9, Malbhog, and China, developed using tissue culture technology, are not only disease-free but also have high yields. This technology has significantly increased farmers’ income from banana cultivation.

Tremendous increase in productivity

While productivity per hectare was previously 20 metric tons, it has now increased to 45 metric tons. According to data from 2022-23, over the past two decades, the area under banana cultivation has increased by 58%, production by 261%, and productivity by 125%. These figures clearly demonstrate that Bihar is becoming self-sufficient in fruit production through tissue culture cultivation.

Government assistance for tissue culture cultivation

Under the Bihar government’s “Fruit Development Scheme,” farmers are being provided a subsidy of up to 50% for adopting tissue culture banana cultivation. Financial assistance of Rs 62,500 is provided per hectare at a unit cost of Rs 1.25 lakh. In the financial year 2024-25, 3,624 farmers benefited from this scheme. This subsidy is proving successful in motivating farmers to adopt technological farming.

What is tissue culture farming?

Tissue culture farming is a scientific method in which plant cells or tissues are grown in nutrient medium in a special laboratory environment. The plants produced through this process are disease-free, fast-growing, and of high quality. This technique is considered particularly successful in banana cultivation because it can produce uniform and high-quality plants.

New possibilities related to banana cultivation

The state government plans to further expand banana cultivation in the coming years. With the spread of tissue culture technology, farmers in Bihar are now able to grow crops that meet global standards. This has also strengthened the state’s economy and raised the standard of living of farmers.

Bihar becomes a hub of banana production

Through all these efforts, Bihar has emerged as a leading state in the field of banana cultivation. According to the government, in the future, similar technological revolution will be brought about in other fruit crops through tissue culture. Millions of farmers in the state will benefit from this.

Conclusion

This transformation of banana cultivation in Bihar is not only an example of technological advancement, but also shows how, through policy, innovation, and government support, farming can be transformed into a profitable business. Through tissue culture farming, farmers are now harvesting more and better crops in less time, increasing their income and providing stability in their lives.
