Bihar becomes a hub for banana cultivation, tissue culture farming boosts farmers’ income

The state of Bihar has made remarkable progress in the agricultural sector through continuous innovation and government initiatives. While total production was 5.45 lakh metric tons in 2004-05, it has increased to 19.68 lakh metric tons in 2022-23. These figures clearly demonstrate that Bihar is becoming self-sufficient in fruit production through tissue culture cultivation.

Government assistance for tissue culture cultivation

Under the Bihar government’s “Fruit Development Scheme,” farmers are being provided a subsidy of up to 50% for adopting tissue culture banana cultivation. Financial assistance of Rs 62,500 is provided per hectare at a unit cost of Rs 1.25 lakh. In the financial year 2024-25, 3,624 farmers benefited from this scheme. This subsidy is proving successful in motivating farmers to adopt technological farming.
