Microgreens Farming in Sikkim: A New Agricultural Revolution in Sikkim, Increase Income by Cultivating Microgreens
Great news for farmers and youth in Sikkim! The state government has launched a new initiative to promote microgreens farming. The aim of this project is to generate more income in less space and learn modern farming methods. This article explains it in detail.
What Are Microgreens?
Microgreens are tiny plants grown from seeds of common vegetables (such as radish, spinach, and coriander). They are rich in nutrients and are rapidly gaining demand in hotels, restaurants, and health-conscious individuals.
Why is it special for Sikkim?
Land scarcity is a major problem in Sikkim, especially in urban areas like Gangtok. Therefore, methods like terrace farming and vertical farming are proving useful here. These techniques allow microgreens to be grown even without a large amount of land.
How will you get training?
1. COFAM (Centre of Floriculture and Agri-Business Management) in Siliguri has trained 150 agricultural officers in Sikkim.
2. These officers will now teach microgreens cultivation to farmers and unemployed youth.
3. Polyhouse and vertical farming techniques allow year-round farming.
What are the benefits?
1. Less space, less cost: Farming is possible even on rooftops or in small spaces.
2. Higher profits: Microgreens fetch a good price in the market.
3. Employment opportunities: Young people can start this as a startup.
4. Tourism link: Demand for them is increasing in Sikkim’s hotels and restaurants.
What is the next step?
The government will advance this project in two phases:
Phase 1: Training farmers and setting up the plant.
Phase 2: Expanding it on a large scale by setting up marketing and processing units.
This initiative by the Sikkim Government is a golden opportunity for farmers and youth. If you also want to earn good income at a low cost, definitely learn microgreens farming.
