Organic Farming: Burhanpur’s Vitthal Guruji’s organic farming has become an inspiration for thousands of farmers

When it comes to moving agriculture towards self-reliance, environmental protection, and health, organic farming emerges as the most effective and sustainable option. Today, when most farmers are worried about the losses caused by chemical farming, Vitthal Narayan Patil, also known as ‘Vitthal Guruji’, from Burhanpur district in Madhya Pradesh, has set an example by adopting organic farming. He left his job as a teacher and devoted himself to farming, and today he has become a farmer earning crores.

He left his job and chose the path of farming.

Vitthal Guruji made a big decision years ago. After completing his M.A. in Economics, he began teaching in a government school, but in 1986, he left his job and returned to his ancestral profession: farming. Initially, farming seemed difficult, with limited land and limited experience, but he did not give up. He was determined to do something new and sustainable—and that path led him to organic farming.

Change started with organic farming

Vitthal Guruji completely abandoned chemical fertilizers and began organic farming in his fields in Dapora Shahpura village. Initially, production was low, but he remained patient. Gradually, organic farming increased yields and profits. Significantly, he planted indigenous seeds and prepared pesticides himself—including cow urine, neem leaves, papaya, and custard apple leaf decoctions.

His organic produce includes numerous crops, including banana, cotton, sugarcane, turmeric, wheat, pigeon pea, maize, millet, and sorghum. He took these crops to new heights through tissue culture techniques and computer automation.

Self-reliance and support of technology

Three years ago, Vitthal Guruji spent 3.5 million rupees on his seven-acre farm, installing an automated irrigation system, including pipelines and a control room. It supplies water and organic fertilizer in a highly controlled manner. This saves water and provides the right amount of nutrition to the crops. This modern system has become a living model for farmers today.

Organic bananas reach abroad

The quality of fruits produced through organic farming is so good that the bananas grown by Vitthal Guruji are exported to Gulf countries. They fetch better prices there, which has increased his income manifold. He no longer needs any loans for farming. He has become completely financially empowered.

Respect and support from the government

Vitthal Guruji’s hard work and success have been recognized at the national level. While serving as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored him at the Global Agriculture Summit in 2013. Furthermore, the central government also sent him to Germany under a scheme to learn and disseminate improved technologies. Recently, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also honored him.

Inspiration for women and farmers

Vitthal Guruji believes that organic farming not only increases farmers’ incomes but also makes society healthy and self-reliant. He is now training other farmers in the district in organic farming. Significantly, many women are also joining farming under his inspiration and becoming self-reliant. His model is not only transforming agriculture but also shaping the social structure of villages.

Advantages of organic farming

Organic farming is not just a method but a philosophy that improves soil quality, conserves groundwater, and is environmentally friendly. This method does not use chemicals, making the food and vegetables produced more nutritious and healthy. Their taste and nutrition are also superior to traditional farming.

Organic farming is cost-effective because it requires neither expensive fertilizers nor expensive pesticides. On the contrary, all the ingredients used are readily available in the fields or villages. This farming system provides youth with self-employment opportunities and creates new jobs in rural areas.

Conclusion

Vitthal Guruji’s story proves that with a change in mindset and hard work, organic farming can become not just an option for farmers but a revolution. Today, when chemical farming is troubling farmers, reducing profits and affecting their health, organic farming is the only path that is both sustainable and profitable. If other farmers take this initiative like Vitthal Guruji, it will not only secure their future but also the health and environment of future generations.
