Karnataka’s Shruti Nursery business earning Rs 50 lakh profit annually
5 star rating from Indian Horticulture Department in 2016
If there is a desire to do something in the heart and if someone tries to fulfill it with full hard work, then success is definitely achieved. A couple from Karnataka has made this thing true. Shruti and her husband Krishna started the nursery business by taking a small space on rent. Today she owns more than 20 acres of land and has become a successful entrepreneur.
Nursery business started in 2011
Shruti and Krishna, residents of Shivamogga city in Karnataka, lived in a joint family in Bengaluru, but due to family disputes, they had to leave Bangalore and come to Shivamogga. Here was the new beginning of their life. In 2011 she started nursery by taking 60×30 square yard of land. She also rented fish nets and shade nets.
Hard work paid off
Shruti’s hard work paid off and in 2012 itself, her nursery was registered by the Horticulture Department. With the help of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Shivamogga, she gradually expanded her nursery to 4 acres. In this way her nursery business went on reaching the pinnacle of success.
Variety of plants
Varashree Farm and Nursery houses exotic fruits like Durian, Mangosteen, Dragon Fruit, Passion Fruit, Capel and Egg Fruit, apart from Mango, Chikoo, Jackfruit, Guava, Pineapple, Pomegranate, Orange, Banana. In addition, Shruti also sells ornamental plants imported from Thailand, China, Malaysia and Bangladesh. Today Shruti knows the nuances of nursery business very well.
Farming started in 20 acres
She started 3-storey farming by buying 20 acres of land. Betel nut, cocoa and pepper began to grow. Gradually the business grew and then she started farming in the polyhouse. At present they have 4 polyhouses, which have the capacity to produce around 1,30,000 saplings.
Nursery got 5 star rating
Her nursery has got a certificate from the Department of Medicine and Aromatics. In 2015, the Indian Horticulture Department gave 3 star rating to her nursery. In 2016 she got 5 star rating. From the government to builders, schools, business services, local councils and common people also buy saplings from them. Their bamboo plants, grass, shrubs, fruit plants, ornamental plants are in great demand. Shruti keeps adopting new techniques to increase her nursery business. She has also started beekeeping and fish farming. Their honey, homemade wine and chocolates are sold out of hand.
What is the profit in nursery business?
About 50 people work in Varashree Farm and Nursery. Their average annual investment is around Rs 30 lakh rupees. In addition, the maintenance cost is Rs 20 lakh rupees. The annual income remains around Rs 1 crore rupees. That is, they have a direct profit of 50 lakh rupees.
Received many awards
Shruti has been honoured with many awards like ‘Mahindra Agriculture Award 2016’, ‘Udyan Ratna Award 2015’ for the success and excellent work of Varashree Farm & Nursery. In 2016, her stall has won the Best Stall Award in the Krishi Mela organized at the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga.
Shruti lives with her family in a beautiful house built on the banks of river Tunga. She is very happy with her work and believes that if you trust the earth, she will give you a lot.
