Improved variety of peas V.L. Vegetable Pea-15 has been considered suitable for hilly and plain areas of Uttarakhand. This high yielding variety gets ready in 128 to 132 days. Its average yield potential is 11 to 13 tonnes per hectare.

What is the specialty of the advanced variety of peas? 

V.L. Vegetable Pea-15′ is the main vegetable crop, which can be grown in any season in hilly areas. Its pods are green and attractive. This variety was released in February 2019 and in Uttarakhand it is considered as the best variety for the state due to its high productivity. Farmers were advised to cultivate it.

The variety is resistant to powdery mildew, wilt, white rot and leaf blight diseases. Because of this its productivity is also high. The height of this variety of plant is less. The leaves are absolutely green. The height of the plants is about 60 to 70 cm. Its pods are dark green and curved. A plant bears 10-18 pods and the length of the pod is 8.5 to 10 cm. In this variety, 50% flowers come only after 80 to 90 days of sowing. In hilly areas, the crop is ready to be picked for first picking after 128-132 days.

What is the climate like for improved variety of peas 

Improved variety of peas ‘VL. Sabzi Matar-15’ gives good yield in cool climate. For this, a temperature of 13-18 ° C is appropriate. Its crop does not grow when the temperature is 29-30 degrees. Actually, in hot and dry weather, pollen grains and seeds are not formed. The seeds of this variety germinate even in 5 °C temperature, but the ideal temperature for germination is 22 °C.

What soil is best? 

This variety of peas can be grown in light sandy loam to clay soil. However, friable loamy soil with good drainage is suitable for better yield. The pH value of the soil should be between 6.5 to 7. If it is less than 6, add lime to the soil.

How to prepare the farm? 

For improved cultivation of ‘Vegetable Pea-15’, 10-15 tonnes of cow dung, 20 kg nitrogen, 60 kg phosphorus and 40 kg potash should be mixed per hectare while preparing the field. Its growth is good by adding phosphorus.

How to sow? 

For its sowing, 75 kg of seed will be required per hectare. At the time of sowing, row to row distance should be 30 cm and plant to plant distance should be 10 cm. Always do sowing in row. Mid November is the suitable time for its sowing in hilly areas.

Peas are also cultivated as a vegetable and pulse crop. Green peas are used as a vegetable, while they can be dried and sold for long-term storage.
