Indian farmers could soon get access to improved vegetable seed varieties following a new partnership between Shriram Farm Solutions, a division of DCM Shriram Ltd., and the ICAR–Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR), Varanasi. The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will give the company access to breeder seeds developed by ICAR-IIVR for five important vegetable crops. The agreement aims to speed up the development and delivery of improved vegetable seeds to farmers across the country.
The MoU was signed during the 98th Foundation Day of ICAR in the presence of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Under the agreement, Shriram Farm Solutions will receive breeder seed material for radish, spinach, pea, cowpea and okra. These breeder seeds will be used to produce certified seed varieties that offer better productivity, quality and adaptability under different growing conditions.
Breeder seeds are the foundation of the seed production system. They are produced and maintained by research institutions before being multiplied into foundation and certified seeds for farmers.
Through this partnership, Shriram Farm Solutions will work with ICAR-IIVR to convert scientific research into commercially available vegetable seed varieties. The company says the collaboration will strengthen its vegetable seed portfolio and help deliver high-performing varieties suited to the changing needs of Indian agriculture.
The agreement also reflects a growing trend of public-private partnerships in agricultural research. While ICAR contributes advanced breeding material and scientific expertise, private companies help multiply seeds and distribute them through established marketing networks, allowing new varieties to reach farmers more quickly.
Focus on Productivity and Climate Resilience
The five crops covered under the agreement are widely cultivated across India and play an important role in vegetable production and farm income.
Researchers expect improved seed varieties to offer higher yields, better quality, greater uniformity and stronger tolerance to environmental stress. As changing weather patterns continue to affect vegetable cultivation, developing climate-resilient varieties has become a priority for both research institutions and seed companies.
Company officials said combining ICAR-IIVR’s breeding programme with Shriram Farm Solutions’ product development and distribution network will help farmers access better seed options while improving productivity and profitability.
Access to quality seed is one of the most effective ways to improve crop production. Better seed varieties can increase yields without requiring additional land while helping farmers manage pests, diseases and weather-related stress more effectively.
The new collaboration is expected to shorten the time needed to move improved vegetable varieties from research stations to farmers’ fields. This can support higher production, improve vegetable quality and strengthen India’s vegetable seed sector through research-led innovation.
A Step Towards Research-Led Agriculture
The partnership between ICAR-IIVR and Shriram Farm Solutions highlights the growing role of collaboration in Indian agriculture. Scientific research alone cannot improve farming unless new technologies and improved varieties reach farmers at scale.
By combining public research with private-sector seed production, the initiative aims to make improved vegetable seeds available to more growers. If implemented successfully, the collaboration could contribute to higher productivity, stronger crop resilience and better incomes for vegetable farmers across India.
