The business of fish seed production can also become a good source of income for the youth. July to August is the best time for breeding. There is a tremendous demand for fish seed during these months. How to prepare fish hatchery, how is its business? Special conversation with Dr. Mukesh Sarang, Deputy Director, Fisheries Department, Bindhyachal Circle, Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, on this.

In today’s time, fish farming has taken the form of a big business all over the world and India holds the second place in the field of fish production in the world. Due to increasing demand for fish, fish production has become the fastest growing agricultural co-business in our country at the rate of eight percent. Today fish farming requires a large amount of fish seed i.e. spawn. By taking advantage of this opportunity, unemployed rural youth and farmers can take training in fish seed production, start this business in their own area and make it an excellent source of income. For detailed information on this, Farmers of India had a special conversation with Dr. Mukesh Sarang, Deputy Director, Fisheries Department, Bindhyachal Mandal, Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh.

Fish hatchery is a golden employment opportunity for rural youth

In today’s time, the work of fish seed production is very beneficial in rural areas. This is a golden employment opportunity for the rural youth. Dr. Mukesh Sarang told that fish breed in rivers, ponds etc. during rains. During this, lakhs of fish eggs get fertilized at these places, and the baby fishes come out. These are called fish seeds. These seeds are called spawn, fry and fingerlings. Ponds and reservoirs do not contain fish seed of just one species, but many species of fish. Their collection is fraught with dangers, as there is a high possibility of predatory fish seeds with them. Therefore, fish hatchery is one of the ways to get pure seed of rearing fish. Two and a half to three crore fish seeds can be produced in the hatchery. There is also a separate provision of 40 to 60 percent subsidy on this from the government.

Fish Seed Production Technology

The Deputy Director of Fisheries further states that in today’s time, fish farmers rely more on fish seeds from fish hatcheries. He told that permanent tanks are made for fish hatchery. In these hatcheries, adult male and female fishes are induced to breed. For this, it rains artificially in a permanent tank. Fishes are induced to breed by giving injections of certain hormones. These hormones are available everywhere in the market. Due to this, the process of making eggs and fertilization in these fish is done quickly. This process is also done in a rectangular box made of mosquito net cloth, which is called hapa, kept in the breeding tank or pond.

How to manage fish seed in hatchery

Dr. Mukesh Sarang says that if we talk about the species of large-sized fish, the Indian Major Crop Rohu female, whose weight is one fort, has the ability to lay one lakh eggs after breeding.

Talking about the hatchery, circular cement and concrete tanks of seven meter diameter circumference are made in it. By connecting it, two tanks are made of two smaller diameters. The pipe inside the small tank is round in shape and 12 duck mouths open in it, which keep the water rotating continuously, so that the eggs run in it and the water in the tank keeps on running. It takes 36 hours for the baby to come out of the egg. These children do not require food for 72 hours. A fine mesh is kept in this, so that if the child is made from the egg, then it can be prepared in it.

Fish hatchery is a better source of earning lakhs

Dr. Sarang informed that five millimetre sized fish hatch from eggs. Actually, they are called spawn i.e. cumin. It is maintained in the nursery. After staying in the nursery for three to four weeks, their size becomes 20 to 25 mm, which are also called fry. After this they are kept in big pond for three months, where 75 to 100 mm size are prepared. Then they are thrown into the pond. These are called fingerlings. About three crore fish seeds i.e. fry can be prepared from such hatcheries in a year. He said that seeds of good species like Rehu, Katla, Mrigal, Grass Carp, Silver Carp and Common Carp are produced. Its pauna seeds i.e. fry sized fish seeds are sold in the market at the rate of about Rs.110 per thousand and cumin at the rate of Rs.750 per lakh. In this way fish seed worth Rs 36 lakh is prepared every year in the hatchery. If we talk about the expenditure on fish seed production, then 50 to 60 percent is spent on its production, whatever is left becomes pure profit. He said that it costs around Rs 25 lakh to prepare a fish hatchery.

Fish seed production training necessary

Dr. Sarang said that fish seed production is not so easy that everyone can do it. There can also be risk in this. That’s why the person who wants to do the work of fish seed production, it is necessary for that person to have complete knowledge. For this, he can get information by visiting the State Fisheries Department, Agricultural Universities, Fisheries Research Institutes.

Dr. Mukesh Sarang further told that the breeding time of fishes lasts from June to September. July to August is the best time for breeding. There is a tremendous demand for fish seed during these months. He said that in case of less supply, the prices of these seeds increase further. Taking advantage of this opportunity, unemployed rural youth and farmers in their area start this business in their own area by taking training in fish seed production, then it can be a great source of income. On the other hand, if the seeds of good species of fish are available at the village level, then fish production will also be better. For this, it is necessary that farmers adopt new techniques of fish farming.
