Pig farming more profit than Dairy industry, but how?
Nitin Barkar is working to change people's perception about Pig farming
In conversation with Kisan of India, Nitin Barkar told that rearing pigs is not as easy as it looks. Much attention has to be paid to their maintenance and fodder. He told us many such things to be taken care of in pig farming.
Whenever there is mention of animal husbandry, usually people think of cow, buffalo, sheep and goat. But there is another good, cheap and profitable option of animal husbandry. This is pig farming. This animal is one of the fastest profitable animals. Kisan of India spoke to Nitin Barkar on this, who is not only himself involved in pig farming, but is also motivating people to come in this area. Farmers from many states of the country and youth are interested in pig farming. They come to consult him. He has a pig farm by the name Baker Pig Farm. Nitin Barkar shared relevant information related to pig farming for our readers.
People’s misconception about Pig farming
Nitin Barkar, a resident of Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh, is a graduate of Agriculture Science. He has also taken training under Agri-Clinic and Agri-Business Center (AC&ABC) scheme organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra located in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh. Seeing the huge market for Pig farming, he decided to join it. In a conversation with Kisan of India, he told that today many people do not consider pig farming to be good. People have a misconception about this animal from the beginning, but this animal has the ability to give good profits in less time than dairy industry, goat farming and poultry farming.
The market is favourable, No problem in selling
Nitin explains that the sale of other cattle has to deal with the problem of getting a market, but when it come to pigs, the market is easily available. There is no competition in the market as well. Because of this the rate of profit remains good. Nitin confirms that till date he has not faced any problem regarding its marketing.
How Pig farming started ?
Nitin Barkar started pig farming from a small scale on the roof of his house with his own investment of 50 thousand. He bought 10 small pigs of Yorkshire breed. Bought them in the ratio of two males and eight females. To ensure that the neighbours are not disturbed, attention has been given to all kinds of maintenance, specially maintaining a clean environment. Male pigs after gaining weight were sold to wholesalers and retailers. This earned him an income of Rs 75,000. After this Nitin bought another consignment of piglets and kept the female pigs for breeding. There are now over 100 pigs in total in his farm. People come from far and wide to take pigs from his farm.
After this, when the pig farming business started getting a good start, he decided to take it on a large scale. Nitin remembers how he had to face problem in buying land for Pig farming. People do not easily give land even on rent for pig rearing. Many pig farming units were closed simply because people in the neighbourhood were against it. When he bought the land, he gave full information about his business to the seller. After that he started expanding his business.
He built a store room in the farm. Separate enclosures should be made for keeping the adult male and female. Separate enclosures were also constructed to keep small children. A separate room was also made for delivery because sometimes female pigs eat their baby after giving birth. They even suppress the children of a day or two. Because of this everything has to be taken care of. A pump was also installed for their washing.
2 to 3 months old baby cost Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3000
Nitin Barkar further told that the female pig gives children twice a year. Their pregnancy is 90 to 110 days. There are at least 8 children at a time. Two to three months old baby is sold in the market for Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3000. Nitin says that the price of pig is also decided according to the weight. They are also sold at Rs. 90 to Rs. 110 per kg.
How is the maintenance taken care of?
Nitin explains that in pig farming, separate enclosures should be made for male, female and children. There should also be good arrangement of water. Pigs are mainly prone to strangulation, hoarseness, skin-related diseases, upset stomach, and swine fever. Timely vaccination is needed to protect the animal from these. Nitin Barkar regularly gets his pigs vaccinated.
Their feed also need proper attention
Nitin further explains that there is a misconception among many people about the diet of pigs. People assume that pigs eat anything. It is not like this. They also need good diet and in right amount. At Barker Pig Farm, special attention is paid to pigs nutrition. The pigs are well monitored for whether they are consuming food or not. Maize, soya DOC, mustard cake, rice groats are postulates of main diet.
Start Pig farming only after training
Giving advice to those interested in rearing pigs, Nitin Barkar says that it is not as easy as it looks. One should step into this field only after adequate training. If you train well then there will be profit too. Nitin says that you should know when to give vaccination, how to do treatment and maintenance. You can take training from Agriculture University and Krishi Vigyan Kendra. After this, pig farming can be started from a small level itself.
