Zinc-Rich Rice: Can Biofortified Varieties Give Farmers Better Crop Value?

0

Rice is one of India’s most important food crops, but farmers are also facing growing pressure to produce crops with better nutritional value. Biofortified rice varieties offer one possible approach by increasing micronutrient content through plant breeding while maintaining the crop’s farming and consumption qualities.

ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research recently organised an awareness and seed distribution programme featuring DRR Dhan 48 and DRR Dhan 63 in Telangana. The programme focused on the nutritional benefits of zinc-rich rice and introduced farmers to these biofortified varieties.

What Is Zinc-Rich Rice?

Biofortified rice is developed through plant breeding to contain higher levels of nutrients such as zinc. Unlike fortification after harvesting, the nutritional trait is built into the crop itself. This means farmers grow the crop normally, while the harvested grain carries the targeted nutritional characteristic.

ICAR-IIRR describes DRR Dhan 48 as a high-yielding, zinc-rich rice variety with medium-slender grains. The variety contains about 22 ppm zinc in polished rice and 27 ppm in brown rice, according to the institute’s technical information.

DRR Dhan 48 also carries three major bacterial leaf blight resistance genes, Xa21, xa13 and xa5. ICAR-IIRR reports that the variety showed high resistance to bacterial leaf blight across multilocation trials, giving it an advantage in areas where this disease creates repeated production problems.

DRR Dhan 48 is suited to irrigated conditions and has a crop duration of about 135–140 days. ICAR-IIRR reports a yield potential of around 5.5–6 tonnes per hectare, although actual farm yield depends on local conditions, planting practices, soil fertility, weather and recommended management.

The variety is recommended for Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Farmers in these states should check local recommendations before selecting seed because a variety’s performance depends strongly on its notified production zone and growing conditions.

DRR Dhan 48 also has characteristics similar to the popular Samba Mahsuri type. ICAR reports good milling and head-rice recovery along with medium-slender grains and desirable cooking qualities. This can matter for farmers because grain quality affects how the harvest is received by consumers and markets.

What About DRR Dhan 63?

DRR Dhan 63 is another zinc-biofortified variety developed by ICAR-IIRR. It contains about 24 ppm zinc and is described as a medium-duration rice variety suitable for irrigated cultivation. The institute recommends it for Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Kerala.

The crop takes about 127–130 days to mature and has short-bold grains. ICAR-IIRR reports a yield of around 6 tonnes per hectare under suitable conditions. The variety is also moderately resistant to leaf and neck blast, bacterial leaf blight and planthoppers.

For farmers, the shorter duration of DRR Dhan 63 compared with some longer-duration rice varieties may provide greater flexibility in crop planning. Still, farmers should compare its duration with their local sowing window, irrigation availability and following crop before replacing an established variety.

Higher nutritional value does not automatically mean farmers will receive a higher market price. The economic benefit depends on seed availability, consumer demand, procurement arrangements, local traders and whether buyers recognise the variety’s quality. Farmers should not assume a premium without checking their local market.

The stronger opportunity may come when production is connected with organised value chains. Farmer Producer Organisations, cooperatives, millers and institutional buyers can help create separate channels for biofortified grain. Such arrangements can make it easier to maintain varietal identity and communicate the nutritional characteristics to consumers.

What Should Farmers Check Before Sowing?

Farmers should first verify whether the variety is recommended for their state, district and production system. They should purchase certified or quality-assured seed from recognised sources and avoid unidentified seed sold only on claims of higher yield or nutrition.

Seed availability is another important point. ICAR-IIRR maintains a seed portal and has developed systems for distributing improved rice varieties. Farmers should check current seed availability and recommended sources rather than purchasing seed from unverified sellers.

Farmers should also compare the new variety with the rice they already grow. Yield, crop duration, disease resistance, grain type, irrigation requirement, local market demand and seed cost all matter. A variety that performs well in one state or district may not deliver the same result elsewhere.

Zinc-rich rice can give farmers another option where the variety is officially recommended and quality seed is available. DRR Dhan 48 and DRR Dhan 63 combine biofortification with useful agronomic traits, but their benefits should be judged under local field conditions.

For farmers, the practical approach is to start with a small demonstration area rather than changing the entire farm at once. Comparing yield, input costs, grain quality, disease performance and market response can help determine whether the variety fits the farm.
