Peas are cultivated in the cold season. It is commonly grown throughout the country. It is sown in October-November after the end of rains. Many improved varieties of peas have been developed. One such new improved variety of pea is ‘VL. Vegetable peas-15’.
In how many days it gets ready?
Improved variety of peas V.L. Vegetable peas- 15 is considered suitable for the hilly and plains of Uttarakhand. This high yielding variety becomes ready in 128 to 132 days. It has an average yield potential of 11 to 13 tonnes per hectare.
What is the specialty of the improved variety of peas?
‘V.L. Vegetable peas- 15’ is the main vegetable crop, which can be grown in any season in hilly areas. Its pods are green and attractive. This variety was released in February 2019 and considering the high productivity of this variety in Uttarakhand, it was considered as the best variety for the state. Farmers were advised to cultivate it.
The variety is resistant to powdery mildew, wilting, white rot and foliar diseases. Due to this, its productivity is also high. Plants of this variety have less height. The leaves are completely green. The height of the plant is about 60 to 70 cm. Its pods are dark green and curved. A plant bears 10-18 pods and the length of the pods range from 8.5cm to 10cm. This variety produces 50% flowers only after 80 to 90 days of sowing. In hilly areas, the crop is ready for harvesting after 128-132 days for the first harvest.
What the climate be like?
Improved variety of peas ‘VL. Vegetable peas- 15’ gives good yield in cool climate. For this, a temperature of 13-18 degree Celsius is appropriate. Its crop does not grow when the temperature is 29-30 degree Celsius. Actually, in hot and dry weather, pollen grains and seeds are not formed. The seeds of this variety germinate even in 5 degree celsius temperature, but the ideal temperature for germination is 22 degree celsius.
How is the soil ?
This variety of peas can be grown in light sandy loam to clay soil. However, friable loamy soil with good drainage is suitable for better yield. The pH value of the soil should be between 6.5 to 7. If it is less than 6, add lime to the soil.

How to prepare the farm?
For improved cultivation of ‘V.L. Vegetable Peas-15’, 10-15 tonnes of cow dung, 20 kg nitrogen, 60 kg phosphorus and 40 kg potash should be mixed per hectare while preparing the field. Its growth gets better by adding phosphorus.
How to sow ?
For sowing 75 kg seeds per hectare will be required. At the time of sowing, row to row distance should be 30 cm and plant to plant distance should be 10 cm. Always sow in a row. The suitable time for sowing in hilly areas is mid-November.
Peas are also cultivated as a vegetable and pulse crop. Green peas are used as a vegetable, while it can be dried and sold for long periods of time.
