For the farmers cultivating Okra, scientists have invented many improved varieties of Okra. These improved varieties, besides giving bumper yield, are also protected from pests. Upendra Singh Patel, a farmer of Varanasi, has achieved bumper yield of Okra by using one such Okra variety.

Okra is cultivated all over the country and its specialty is that it can be grown throughout the year. Okra is also called Okra. Apart from being excellent in taste, okra is also rich in nutrients. It contains good amount of Vitamin C and Vitamin K. It is also rich in antioxidants, which reduces the risk of many serious diseases. Okra is considered very beneficial for health. Agricultural scientists are constantly developing new varieties of it, so that farmers can get higher yields and also reduce the damage caused by pests. A high yielding variety developed by scientists is Kashi Chaman, which matures in just one and a half months.

Who developed the variety of Okra, Kashi Chaman?

Kashi Chaman, an improved variety of Okra, was developed in 2019 by ICAR-Indian Vegetable Research Institute, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The specialty of this variety is that it can be cultivated in both summer and rainy season.

This variety is disease resistant

This variety is not affected by Yellow Vain Mosaic Virus (YVMV) and Okra Enation Leaf Curl Virus (OELCV) diseases. It has good immunity against these diseases.

Both these diseases are considered very dangerous for the okra crop and cause great damage to the crops. Kashi Chaman is not only disease resistant, but its yield potential is also more than 21.66 percent compared to other varieties. This is the reason that this variety has become popular in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, it is being cultivated in an area of about 10,000 hectares.

Fertilizers and pesticides were used as prescribed by them. He made the first harvest of the crop 46 days after sowing. After this, at an interval of 3-4 days, he started harvesting 35 to 40 kg of okra. In about 90 days till October, he got 668 kg of Okra crop. Due to this he got a net profit of about Rs 21,376.

The sandy loam soil is considered the best for the cultivation of Okra. There should be proper drainage system in the field. The pH value of the soil should be 7-8. Okra crop is good in Kharif and rainy season. Too much heat and too cold weather can damage its crop. Okra cultivation is not successful in areas where its frosty in winter. Okra seeds require 20 degree  Celsius temperature to germinate and then 27-30 degree Celsius temperature for the crop to develop.

When to sow ?

For summer crop, okra seeds are sown in the month of February to March and during the rainy season its seeds are sown in the month of July. The seeds should be treated with cow urine or carbendazim before sowing. About 5 kg of seed is required for sowing in one hectare. At the time of sowing, keep a distance of one foot between row to row and 25-30 cm between plant to plant. To control weeds, do weeding from time to time and use insecticides to prevent pests.
