Azad Verma, a resident of Hata village in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, has taken the initiative to spread modern technologies in the agricultural sector. According to him, “Innovation in agriculture and the inclusion of modern techniques will not only increase the income of farmers, but it will also have a positive impact on the country’s GDP.” Azad’s goal is to introduce farmers to new technologies and help them adopt them, which can increase production and income.
Importance of spreading new technologies
Azad Verma believes that the spread of modern technologies can bring revolutionary changes in the productivity and income of Indian farmers. He says, “Even today, most of the farmers in India follow traditional farming methods, which demand more time, labor, and resources. Whereas with the use of new technologies, this hard work can be reduced and crop production can be increased manifold.” This vision of Azad lays the foundation for a comprehensive change in the agricultural sector, where farmers can earn more profit from their land by adopting more scientific and advanced methods.
Azad gave the example of drip irrigation and said that this technique saves 30-50% of water. Along with this, the plants get constant moisture, which has a positive effect on their growth. Apart from this, saving water is not only necessary for the crop, but it is also helpful in environmental protection, especially in areas where water crisis is increasing. Soil erosion is reduced due to drip irrigation, which maintains the fertility of the land.
Azad also explains that by using soil testing technology, farmers can better understand the structure of their land and its requirements. Based on this information, they can use fertilizers in the right quantity and at the right time, which promotes crop quality and production. He says, “Knowledge of soil quality provides the crop with the right nutrients and also improves plant growth. This prevents indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers on the land and also maintains the natural fertility of the soil.” According to Azad, if these techniques are disseminated to farmers and they are given proper training, it can improve their farming methods. He believes that only technical knowledge can make farmers self-reliant and can increase production by reducing the cost in agriculture. He also thinks that when farmers adopt these techniques, their crop production will not only be high, but it will also help in environmental protection and climate adaptation.
Azad’s vision is of such a farming, which is not only profitable, but also promotes environmental protection. If this thinking and vision of his is conveyed to the farmers with the help of the government and other institutions, then it can contribute to the food security and economic growth of the country.
Communication with farmers
Azad Verma spends most of his time communicating with farmers and explaining to them the benefits of new technologies. He believes that only giving technical information to farmers is not enough; they also have to be convinced that their income and productivity will improve through these techniques. Azad says, “Introducing farmers to modern farming techniques is one step, but the real challenge is to make them understand how these techniques can bring a positive change in their lives.”
Azad believes that technical knowledge is the only tool that can make them self-reliant, especially for small farmers. He has observed that many farmers rely on traditional methods because they are uncertain about new technologies. Therefore, Azad uses every opportunity to encourage them to adopt new methods. For example, he told farmers that with the help of soil quality testing techniques, they can choose the right fertilizer for their crop, which improves crop growth and production.
Azad has trained many farmers of the village in soil testing, water management and proper use of machinery. He says that by knowing the quality of the soil, farmers can choose the right nutrients for the crops, which works to give life to the plants. Apart from this, he also emphasized on the use of modern machines, such as tractors and harvesting machines, which save labor and time. Azad says, “If farmers prepare the fields on time and can harvest the crop on time, then both their hard work and cost will be reduced.”
Azad tries to make farmers aware of new technologies and include innovation in their agricultural methods. In his dialogues, he also tells farmers how to properly use the training programs and grants provided by the government. He wants farmers to not only become financially strong, but also achieve self-reliance in agriculture.
Seeing this effort of Azad, other farmers also get encouraged and come forward to adopt new methods. His dialogues not only contain technical knowledge, but also an intimacy and encouragement, which inspires farmers to bring innovation in their farming.
Example: Increase in income from advanced agriculture
Azad Verma explains that the use of modern agricultural techniques can bring a big change in the income of farmers. He says, “If a farmer cultivates paddy in one acre of land in the traditional way, then he gets an average yield of 15-20 quintals. At the same time, this production can be increased to 25-30 quintals through modern techniques such as improved seeds, proper use of fertilizers and water management.” The basis of Azad’s statement is scientific research and agricultural research done by the government, which show that about 30-50% more production is possible with advanced agricultural methods.
Azad explained that the use of improved seeds, which have high resistance and high yield, can contribute significantly to crop production. These seeds are selected keeping in mind the quality of the soil and the climate, which maintains stability in the growth process of the crop. Apart from this, using the soil testing method, identifying the necessary fertilizers and nutrients in it is also an important aspect. This gives farmers accurate information on which fertilizer should be used in their land and reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers in crop growth.
Emphasizing the importance of water management, Azad said that measures like “drip irrigation” not only save water but also provide the necessary moisture to the plants continuously. This method saves water and maintains the moisture balance in the land. He gave the example that while more water is used in traditional irrigation, drip irrigation can save up to 50-60% of water.
According to Azad’s experience, the use of these techniques not only increases production but also improves the quality of the crop, which proves helpful in getting better prices in the market. According to him, with advanced techniques, the income from paddy crop from one acre of land can be increased by 20-30%. Such examples make it clear that if farmers farm scientifically and use new techniques, their income and productivity can increase significantly.
Lack of government schemes
Azad has not yet availed any government scheme. He believes that if more farmers get the support of government schemes, the spread of technology can happen more rapidly. He said that to make farmers self-reliant, the government should make special schemes that can provide financial and technical support to small farmers. Azad has also worked to spread awareness in this direction, so that farmers can take advantage of the schemes and it becomes easier for them to adopt new technologies in their fields.
Future plans
Azad Verma’s aim is not limited to his village only; he wants more and more farmers to connect with new technologies. His dream is that modern agricultural techniques reach every village of Uttar Pradesh and farmers become economically empowered. He says, “Until farmers know how to make the best use of their resources, our agriculture cannot become completely self-reliant.”
These efforts of Azad have given rise to a new awareness in his village. His thoughts and actions can become a source of inspiration for other farmers in the times to come. He believes that technical education is the key to make Indian agriculture globally competitive.
