The agricultural scientists of the country keep on developing improved varieties of crops from time to time so that the farmers get good yield and benefit. Recently, agricultural scientists have developed drought resistant and high yielding improved chickpea variety.

This variety has been developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in collaboration with scientists from Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University, Jabalpur, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Agricultural University, Gwalior and ICRISAT, Patancheru Hyderabad. This drought tolerant variety of chickpea is tolerant to diseases like fusarium wilt and stunt. Let us tell you about this variety.

Variety name and characteristics

The improved variety of gram has been named as Pusa JG 16 (chickpea variety Pusa JG 16). This variety has been developed using Genomic-assisted breeding techniques.

ICAR-IARI Director Dr. A.K. Singh said that the Pusa JG 16 variety of gram would prove to be a boon for the farmers of the drought-prone areas of the central region of the country. The variety was developed under the leadership of Dr. C. Bhardwaj, Scientist, ICAR-IARI in collaboration with Dr. Rajeev Varshney and Dr. Manish Roorkewal from ICRISAT, Dr. Anita Babbar from JNKVV and Dr. Indu Swaroop from RVSKVV.

Benefits of Improved chickpea variety 

According to Dr. Bhardwaj, the improved variety of gram is drought resistant, besides resistant to fusarium wilt and stunt diseases and it will be ready to ripen in a short period of time in just 110 days. At the same time, its production capacity will be around 2 tonnes per hectare.

For which areas is the improved variety of gram useful?

It will prove to be be useful for drought-prone regions of Madhya Pradesh, Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Southern Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
