Rawalchand says that he started organic farming 10 years ago. The harm caused by chemical farming inspired him towards environmentally friendly methods. He not only adopted organic farming, but also innovated in it and developed two new varieties of sweet potato.
According to him:
“It was difficult in the beginning. It took time to restore soil fertility and increase productivity, but the results of organic farming are amazing. Now I see my farm as a model.”
New variety of sweet potato: An example of innovation
Rawalchand has developed two new varieties of sweet potato with his “selection method”. These varieties not only give higher yields but also give better results with less water and care.
His innovation resulted in:
1. Increase in production: Production per acre increased by 20%.
2. Decrease in water consumption: Meets the need for less water in desert areas.
3. Disease resistance: These varieties were found to have better disease resistance than normal sweet potatoes.
Ravalchand says:

“Using organic manure and medicines improved the quality of the soil and reduced the production cost. This is very important for small farmers like me,” he says.

Ravalchand has installed a solar power plant on his farm, which meets his energy needs. Apart from this, he has availed drip irrigation, mulching, and Lotnal drip irrigation schemes.
According to him, “Government schemes have made my farming even more effective. These schemes can prove to be a boon for small and medium farmers.”
Inspiration for local farmers
Ravalchand’s farm now serves as a training centre. Farmers come here to learn the methods and techniques of organic farming.
He says:
“I want every farmer to adopt organic farming and understand the benefits of eco-friendly farming. This is necessary for our future generations.”

Although organic farming has many benefits, there were initial challenges in adopting it. Rawalchand said:
“Initially it was difficult to find a market for organic products. But with time, people understood the importance of quality organic products. Now the demand for my products is increasing.”
He advised farmers to “adopt organic farming with patience and hard work. It is beneficial for both your farm and the environment.”
Future plans
Rawalchand plans to make his farming more technologically advanced. He wants to set up a processing unit for organic products, so that his products can be sent to national and international markets.
