Scientists of Makhana Research Center have developed Swarna Vaidehi Makhana variety, which not only has a very high production capacity, but it is also rich in nutrients. This is India’s first variety which gives about 1.5 times more yield than traditional seeds.

Use of Makhana variety ‘Swarna Vaidehi’

Swarna Vaidehi variety is not only of high quality but is also resistant to diseases and pests. Swarna Vaidehi variety of Makhana is easily used in everyday food to make kheer, halwa, milk sweets, snacks, dal makhani, to enhance the taste of vegetables. Along with this, Swarna Vaidehi variety is used in making medicines, preparing beauty products.

Specialty of Makhana variety ‘Swarna Vaidehi’

The yield of Swarna Vaidehi variety is 28-30 quintals per hectare, whereas the average yield of traditional seeds is 20-21 quintals per hectare. You get high quality Makhana from this. The possibility of diseases and pests is also very low in Swarna Vaidehi variety.

Swarna Vaidehi Makhana variety has circular leaves of 110 cm diameter that float on the water. In this species, 50 percent of the flowers appear in 120-125 days only. The diameter of the seeds of Swarna Vaidehi variety Makhana is 9.5-10.2 mm and the weight of 100 grains is up to 92-98 grams. Its color is white like milk. Carbohydrates, proteins and other nutrients are found in abundance in Swarna Vaidehi variety. Swarna Vaidehi variety is in great demand in the market.

How to cultivate the improved variety of Swarn Vaidehi?

To get maximum production from the improved Swarn Vaidehi variety, farmers will have to grow it using the scientific method.

Land and sowing time

Swarn Vaidehi variety of Makhana can be planted in all Makhana producing areas. Both clay and loamy soil are considered best for its cultivation, because it has high water absorbing capacity.

For good production, nursery sowing should be done in December and the work of planting saplings should be completed from the first week of February to the second week of April.

Method of sowing of Swarn Vaidehi

Swarn Vaidehi variety of Makhana can be cultivated both by traditional pond method or modern field system method. In the pond method, 70 kg of seeds are sown per hectare, whereas in the field system method, the plants grown in a nursery of 500 square meters prepared from 20 kg of seeds are sufficient for planting in one hectare of field. While transplanting the Swarn Vaidehi variety, keep a distance of 1.25 meters between plants and 1.25 meters between rows. For higher production, transplant from the first week of February to the second week of April.

Mithilanchal region of Bihar is quite famous for Makhana cultivation. Good quality Makhana is produced here. The special thing is that ‘Mithila Makhana’ has also got GI tag.

Government is giving subsidy on Makhana

The state government is running many development schemes including the Swarn Vaidehi variety of Makhana to increase the income of farmers. Under which, farmers are also being given up to 75 percent subsidy on the storage house for Makhana cultivation.
