Sandeep Kumar, who hails from a small village in Jhajjar district of Haryana, has not only increased his production by adopting a new approach of protected farming in agriculture, but has also become an inspiration for the farmers around him. Sandeep is successfully using two main structures of protected farming – net house and hi-tech structure, which have increased his income manifold.
Initiation and technique of protected farming
Sandeep has used protected farming in his farm on about five acres of land. When he was discussed about this technique, he said, “In protected farming, we get a stable environment of crop protection, which reduces the effect of weather fluctuations and improves the quality of the crop.”
In net house, Sandeep mainly grows vegetables and fruits, while hi-tech structure is used to prepare seedlings of plants. He said that this protected system protects plants from pests and diseases, which leads to less use of chemical pesticides. This is not only beneficial for the environment but also provides safe products to consumers.
Improvement in quality and income
This model of protected farming has significantly increased Sandeep’s income. According to him, “Protected farming has enabled me to earn three to four times more profit than before.” Sandeep’s success is not limited to his farm only. He also provides plants prepared in his high-tech structure to other farmers, so that they are also getting the benefit of this method.
Support and awards from government schemes
Sandeep has received several awards for his contribution to protected farming, including the state-level Progressive Farmer Award and Udgam Agripreneurship Award. These awards have not only recognized his efforts but also inspired him to take up new endeavors.
Sandeep has also availed solar tubewell connection for protected farming. This scheme has proved to be highly beneficial for him, as it has helped him save on electricity costs for irrigation and given his farm a stable energy source.
Inspiration for other farmers
According to Sandeep, his aim is to make protected farming techniques accessible to as many farmers as possible. “The benefits of this technology should reach small farmers as well, so that they too can avoid the uncertainties of the weather and grow high-quality crops,” said Sandeep.
His knowledge and technical understanding of protected farming has inspired many farmers to come to him and adopt his techniques. Farming done through net houses and high-tech structures has not only improved their livelihoods but has also created a new awareness in the field.
The future of protected farming and Sandeep’s vision
Sandeep’s contribution in the field of protected farming has emerged as an example. According to him, “Protected farming can prove to be a revolutionary step for India, especially when it can reach small and medium-sized farmers.” According to Sandeep, this type of farming not only increases production but also improves the economic condition of the farmers.
He plans to train more farmers in this protected farming in the coming years, so that the economic condition of the farmers can be strengthened and they can become self-reliant. Due to Sandeep’s efforts, protected farming is getting a new identity in Haryana today, which can prove to be an important guide for the future of Indian agriculture.
