Farmers benefit from moong seed production
Digambarbhai Valvi got huge profit from moong seed production, instead of selling moong as grain, he sold it as seed.
Pulses are a cheap and excellent source of protein for vegetarians, hence the consumption of pulses and its products is high in the country. Protein is abundant in moong. It also has a good demand in the market, but there is a shortage of quality moong seed in the country. In view of this, the Ministry of Agriculture Welfare established Seed Hub Centers under the Council of Agricultural Research, Government of India, to increase the production of seeds. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Vyara is also one of the seed hubs selected under this project. Here, tur, gram and moong seeds were produced in Kharif, Rabi and summer seasons. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Vyara also organized several training programs on seed production, which benefited the farmers.
This farmer of Gujarat started seed production
After attending a training program organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Vyara, Digambarbhai, a farmer from Tapi district of Gujarat, started production of moong seed. He was provided 95 kg seeds of GM-6 advanced variety of moong by Krishi Vigyan Kendra. They were also informed about how to register themselves as seed producers. In fact, after visiting Digambarbhai’s farm, the scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendra told him about the Seed Hub scheme and inspired him to produce moong seeds.
Production of abundant moong seed through scientific techniques
Digambarbhai used scientific techniques for crop production after sowing the improved seeds from KVK. Due to this, he got good yield and did not see the outbreak of diseases and pests. He did not face any difficulty in getting himself registered as a seed producer, as the Gujarat Seed Certification Agency helped him in this task.
How much profit was made in seed production?
Digambarbhai received 2888 kg of moong seeds, which was purchased by KVK Vyara at the rate of Rs 9,000 per quintal under the Seed Hub scheme. Thus, he earned an income of about Rs.2,59,920, out of which after deducting the cost of Rs.29,100, there was a net profit of Rs.2,30,280. Had he sold the moong as grain in the market, he would have earned only Rs 1,73,060.
Digambarbhai is fully satisfied with the seed production scheme and is motivating other farmers of nearby villages for the same. Digambarbhai is a progressive farmer who always believes in using new technology in farming. Apart from this, he does not hold back from doing new experiments in farming.
Moong has the highest protein content in pulse crops, hence it is considered very beneficial for health. The demand of Green Moong is increasing day by day among the people and to meet this increasing demand there is a need to produce more, for which good quality seeds will be needed. That’s why moong seed production is a profitable deal, due to which farmers are also earning well.
