Farmers will get double profit by cultivating Celery with Green Peas
7-8 quintals of celery is produced per acre
A special winter crop is a green pea grown from vegetable to seed preparation. But the farmers’ profit is continuously decreasing due to the increasing cost of farming. In such a situation, there is a need to adopt other ways of earning. Farmers of Haryana have adopted the method of mixed cropping of peas for additional income. Along with peas, they cultivate celery, also known as parsley. Celery is rich in medicinal properties and is used in making salads, vegetable curries, soups, etc. Hence it has a good demand in the market.
What is the specialty of Celery?
Celery is used in the form of salad and is helpful in the treatment of many diseases because it has medicinal properties from its stem to leaves and seeds. It is rich in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron. Due to its numerous benefits, it has good demand in the market. To take advantage of this, the farmers of Haryana adopted new techniques of farming, in which they started mixed farming of green peas and celery, due to which they are getting more profit than before.
When and how to Sow?
For this, the celery seeds should be sown in October by sprinkling method after plowing the field well. 4 kg seed is required per acre. The celery crop is good in light sandy loam soil. Its seeds are soaked in water for 24 hours and then sown in the field. Its germination takes 4-6 weeks. Sow pea seeds after treating them with rhizobium. Sow 35-40 kg of butter seeds in one acre with a band planter. Pea crop is given 3-4 irrigations. Also, add Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash for a good crop.
How much is the Crop?
The crop of peas per acre is 50-55 quintals, and that of celery is 7-8 quintals. Celery is sold at 6-7 thousand rupees per quintal.
When is the Crop ready?
Green peas are harvested from December to February, while in February, two pickings are done in 15-20 days after harvesting peas. After this, add 23 kg of Nitrogen per acre in celery. For a good crop, irrigation must be done during flowering and grain emergence in the celery. The crop of celery will be ready by the end of April. Its harvesting is done manually.
Although parsley is not used much in food even today in the village, but it is in great demand in the cities. Especially in big hotels. Apart from this, it is also used for enhancing the aroma of soups, salads, vegetables and for decoration in weddings. This is the reason why it is sold expensive. Farmers of many areas of Rajasthan and Haryana are earning profit from its cultivation.
