Vishal Kumawat, a farmer from Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh, aims to double his income by using new technologies in farming. His efforts to produce more at less cost make him a role model for other farmers. He has started experiments of modern farming on the limited land of his village, which has not only increased his income but has also promoted environmental conservation and efficient use of resources.
Initial struggles
Vishal was passionate about farming since childhood. However, he faced many challenges while farming with limited resources and traditional methods.
He explains:
“In the initial days, the profit from traditional farming was less. Then I thought that if farming has to be taken as a business, then new technologies will have to be used.”
Use of new technologies
Vishal started using many new technologies to make farming advanced and more profitable. He adopted the technology of drip irrigation and precision farming, which made efficient use of water and fertilizers possible.
• Drip irrigation: This system provides water to the crops as per their requirement, which reduces water wastage.
• Soil testing: He got his land tested, which revealed which nutrients were lacking. Fertilizers were used based on this.
• Artificial intelligence (AI) based sensors: He installed sensors in the fields, which give accurate information about soil moisture and crop condition.
Crop selection and productivity
Vishal opted for more profitable crops instead of traditional crops.
He said:
“I shifted from traditional wheat and gram cultivation to growing vegetables, spices and medicinal plants. This gave profit according to the demand in the market.”
His major crops:
1. Tomato and chilli: These crops are sold at a higher price in the market.
2. Turmeric and ginger: Their demand is increasing due to medicinal properties.
3. Medicinal plants: Like Ashwagandha and Tulsi.
Environmental protection
Vishal has also promoted organic farming. He uses vermicompost and biofertilizers, which have improved the quality of his crops.
He explains:
“Organic farming not only improves the quality of the produce, but is also beneficial for the environment.”
Interaction with farmers
Vishal believes that sharing of knowledge leads to collective development. He also inspired other farmers in his village to adopt new techniques. Vishal showed the farmers how to earn more profit at less cost. With his help, the farmers have started drip irrigation and organic farming.”
Benefits of government schemes
Although Vishal has not yet availed any government scheme, he is aware of the government’s agricultural schemes.
He said:
“If I get the right information about the government schemes, I can take advantage of them and improve my farming work.”
Economic and social impact
Vishal’s modern farming has not only improved his economic condition but has also created new employment opportunities in his village. The labourers working on his farm said that they now get regular work and good wages.
Awards and recognition
Although Vishal has not received any formal award yet, he is appreciated locally for his achievements and farming methods.
Future plans
Vishal plans to develop his farm as a model farm that other farmers can see and learn from.
He says:
“My aim is that my farming not only increases my income but I can also inspire other farmers to take advantage of new technologies.”
Vishal Kumawat’s story shows how farming can be made profitable with new techniques and awareness. His hard work and approach are a source of inspiration for other farmers.
His journey gives a message that by combining modernity and tradition, farming can not only be made economically profitable but also sustainable. Only farmers like Vishal can give new direction and height to India’s agriculture sector.
