Increasing demand for jackfruit, its products have a good market.
Jackfruit comes in both fruit and vegetable categories. Vegetables made of small jackfruit are very tasty, so some people also call it Desi Chicken. Jackfruit is rich in many nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamins A, C, and potassium. When its plants become big trees, they give fruit for many years. The jackfruit tree bears fruit twice a year. That’s why Jackfruit Farming can prove to be a profitable deal.
Soil and Weather
Jackfruit is cultivated all over the country. Its specialty is that it thrives in any type of soil, but its crop is very good in sandy loam soil. Along with this, it should be kept in mind that there should be no water-logging around the tree, that is, it is very important to have a good drainage system. Soil pH Values closer to 7 are considered good. As far as weather is concerned, it gives a good yield in hot and humid weather. It grows well in places with high heat and rain, but extreme cold is not good for jackfruit crops. Its plants do not develop well at temperatures below 10 ° C.
Improved varieties of Jackfruit
If you are also thinking of cultivating jackfruit, then you can earn good profit by planting some advanced varieties of it.
Khajwa: This variety is suitable for use as a fruit rather than a vegetable, as its fruits ripen quickly.
Swarna Manohar: This variety of jackfruit is high yielding. Its trees are small, but fruits are planted in large numbers. A good number of jackfruits can be plucked from the tree and sold for vegetables only after 20-25 days of fruiting.
Swarna Purti: This variety of jackfruit is suitable for vegetables. Its fruits are of small size with fewer fibers and seeds. That’s why its vegetable becomes tasty. Its fruits ripen late.
Many food products are prepared from Jackfruit
Farmers can earn by selling jackfruit, but to increase their income, knowledge of its value-added products is necessary. Jackfruit pickle is made. After boiling and roasting jackfruit seeds, their flour can be prepared. The Bangalore-based ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research has developed three food products from jackfruit.
Jackfruit Juice – A drink prepared from jackfruit. Jackfruit pulp is prepared into a liquid using a fermentation process. Then the serum is separated from this liquid and water is added in a certain proportion to this serum. It can be stored in glass bottles at room temperature for up to 6 months. 2.5 to 3 liters of juice is obtained from one kg of jackfruit. It has been named Arka Halsuras. There is no added sugar or other preservatives in this drink. The sweetness in this drink is due to the fructose and sorbitol present in it. It contains 15-18 mg of vitamin C, 2.1-2.4 mg of carotenoids, and 1.1-1.2 mg of antioxidants per 100 ml.
Mushroom-based Chocolate – Everyone likes chocolate. That’s why the Institute of Horticulture has also prepared special chocolate from jackfruit seeds. A fresh jackfruit contains 15-23 seeds. It is usually thrown away, but the same seeds can also be used to make chocolate. It can be prepared by making a powder of jackfruit seeds and mixing it with mushroom, sesame, and butter in a certain proportion. This chocolate has been named Arka Jacolate. This product has 5-6 percent protein, fat, and low-calorie content. The seeds contain 60 to 65 percent starch (RS-type-2), 2 percent crude fiber, and antibodies and anticarcinogenic properties.
Biscuits – The Indian Institute of Horticultural Research has also made biscuits from jackfruit. It is made from mushroom and jackfruit seed powder. The defatted bran of cereals is usually used for making biscuits, but instead of that, using jackfruit seed powder is more beneficial in terms of health. These biscuits are rich in calcium, magnesium, and iron.
