Kanwal Singh Chouhan gives guarantee price to farmers

This is the story of Kanwal Singh Chauhan, a progressive farmer whose wisdom changed the lives of ten thousand farmers in Aterna village and dozens of adjoining villages in Haryana’s Sonipat district. Although Kanwal Singh became active in farming in 1980, at the age of 18, his habit of learning from personal experiences and finding new solutions to challenges has started doing such wonders since 1998 that today he has four processing units and are also exporters themselves. The biggest feature of Kanwal Singh’s business model is that it guarantees the farmers to buy their produce before cultivation. 

Farmer-turned-Exporter 

Like the common farmers of his area, Kanwal Singh also tried his hand in the cultivation of Basmati paddy. But in the year 1985, such a disease occurred in the crop that even insecticides, biogas and biological treatments could not control it. After this, Kanwal Singh took up the cultivation of baby corn, sweet corn, mushroom and tomato for better income and started selling the produce by taking it to Delhi. But if good price for the produce is not made available there, then the exporter made a relationship with the traders. When this trick worked, he inspired the nearby farmers by guaranteeing them to buy the crop. 

Caravan now reaches to four processing units 

The idea of ​​guaranteeing the price of the produce to the farmers gave miraculous results. Because very soon Kanwal Singh learned that for better and sustainable income, it is very important to process agriculture and connect with the market, because the real margin is in it. Kanwal Singh entered the world of processing in 2005. The ability to guarantee prices to the farmers enabled them to get such high yields that they had to increase the number of processing units on sight.

Change is the mantra to success 

When the business grew, hundreds of people including all the women got employment. Seeing the pressure of production, he also taught him the tricks of becoming an exporter. Today the story of Kanwal Singh is showing the way to lakhs of people. That is why he received dozens of honours including Padma Shri. There is only one mantra of Kanwal Singh that ‘income in agriculture will not increase without change’. He says that if the government does not burden farmers with more interest and farmers do progressive farming, then there is every possibility of increasing income with time and efforts.
