Meet the Farmer Using Worms to Revolutionize Organic Farming in India

0

Innovating agriculture means using new techniques and methods like earth worms in the field of agriculture to increase productivity, reduce costs and make farming more sustainable. Rohan Singh Patel, a young and emerging farmer, has brought innovation in his farming methods. He ventured into organic vermicomposting and promoted it in his area. This article will detail his agricultural journey, the technique of vermicomposting and its importance.

From a startup to organic farming

Rohan Singh Patel started his career with a startup, but due to his interest in agriculture and the possibilities in organic farming, he moved towards organic vermicomposting. He says, “I started organic vermicomposting because it is not only good for the environment, but through this we can also improve the quality of crops.”

He started vermicomposting two years ago, in which he adopted the technique of making organic fertilizer. This process helps in reusing agricultural waste and keeping the environment clean. This manure is used to increase the fertility of the soil, which also improves the crop yield and quality.

Vermicomposting Process: Making Good Use of Natural Resources

Vermicomposting is a biological process in which organic waste is converted into compost using earthworms (vermi). Rohan Singh Patel started this process in his farm, where he converts agricultural waste, such as leaves, cow dung and other organic matter, into fertilizer with the help of earthworms.

He says, “We collect organic waste in our farm and convert it into vermicompost. In this process, earthworms eat the organic waste and turn it into a high-quality manure, which is again used in the fields.”

Vermicomposting – A Balanced Business Model

Rohan Singh Patel made an initial investment of about Rs 2 lakh in organic vermicomposting. He said that this business involves a little cost initially, but once the vermicompost is ready, it can be easily sold and also gives good profits. His compost is used by nearby farmers, so that he is able to give a useful product not only for himself but also for other farmers.

Profits in vermicomposting increase with time, as the demand for organic manure is constantly increasing. Rohan Singh Patel believes that there will be even more possibilities in the field of organic farming and vermicomposting in the future.

Lack of government schemes and assistance

Although Rohan Singh Patel has achieved success in the direction of vermicomposting, he has not taken any advantage of government schemes. He says, “I have started this work with my own efforts and did not take advantage of any government scheme. However, in the future I will see what kind of government assistance is available and how it can be used.”

Use of new technologies in vermicomposting: Combination of traditional and modern

In the process of vermicomposting, Rohan Singh Patel uses traditional methods as well as some modern technologies. He told that zero waste technology is used to make vermicompost, in which waste materials are reused without any loss.

Currently, Rohan is exploring new technologies to make the process of making vermicompost more efficient. Although, he has not used any large-scale machinery yet, but in future he plans to make this process more fast and efficient through machines.

Challenges and solutions in vermicomposting

Rohan Singh Patel faced many challenges during vermicomposting. According to him, “In the beginning, I had a lot of difficulty. It was a big challenge to explain the utility of vermicompost to the farmers. Many farmers were not aware of the benefits of this organic fertilizer, but I did not lose patience.”

To make farmers aware about the benefits of vermicompost, he organized farmer seminars in the village and also displayed his product in fairs. In this way, he gradually won the trust of the farmers and the demand for vermicompost started increasing.

Future plans: Taking organic farming even further

Rohan Singh Patel now wants to expand his vermicomposting process even further. His goal is to produce his organic manure on a large scale and make it available to farmers. Apart from this, he is planning to use even more organic techniques in his farm, so that he can work towards completely organic farming.

Infinite possibilities of organic vermicomposting

This story of Rohan Singh Patel is not only about his hard work and dedication, but it is also an inspiration for all those farmers who want to move beyond traditional farming towards organic farming and vermicomposting.

Vermicomposting is not only beneficial for the environment, but it also helps farmers to get better profits and high quality crops. This journey of Rohan Singh Patel proves that if we work in the right direction and are ready to face challenges, then success can be achieved in any field.
