Mustard Seed: Mustard cultivation is an important source of income for farmers in India. But to get a good yield, it is most important that the mustard seed has better germination. If the initial management is done correctly, both the quality and production of the crop increase. Let us know how we can start right with mustard seeds for better germination.
Soil selection
Proper germination of mustard seeds is possible only when the soil is suitable. Loamy and light soil is considered best for mustard. If the soil is alkaline or saline, the crop production may be reduced. Therefore, while selecting the soil, it is important to pay special attention that it is soft and fertile.
Preparation of field
Good preparation of the field is very important for better germination. First of all, do a deep plowing with a soil turning plow. After this, plow twice with a cultivator to make the soil friable and level the field by using a patta. If you are farming in an irrigated area, then mix 8-10 tonnes of rotten cow dung manure per hectare well in the field 3-4 weeks before sowing and irrigate it. At the same time, in rainfed areas, 4-5 tonnes of cow dung manure should be mixed in the field before the rain. This gives a favorable environment to the mustard seeds for germination and the plants become strong.
Seed quantity
The quantity of mustard seed also plays an important role in germination. In non-irrigated areas, 4-5 kg of seeds per hectare are sufficient. At the same time, in irrigated areas, 2.5 to 3 kg of seeds per hectare is enough. By sowing the right amount of seeds, the plants get enough space and nutrients to grow.
Seed Treatment
For good germination and protection from diseases, treatment of mustard seeds is very important. Before sowing, treat the seeds with a medicine called Thiras or Captan at the rate of 2 grams per kilogram of seeds. This prevents diseases occurring in the initial stage of the crop and also improves the growth of the plants. If the seed treatment is done correctly, the rate of germination also increases significantly.
Right time for sowing
Germination of mustard seeds also depends on the weather. The time from 10 to 20 October is considered most suitable for sowing. During this period, both temperature and soil moisture are favorable for germination. If it is delayed more than this or the temperature becomes too high, then the risk of plants dying increases, which may affect production.
Sowing Method
Mustard seeds should be sown in rows. Keep a distance of about 30 cm between one row and another. There should be a distance of 10 to 15 cm between the plants.
If there is not enough moisture in the field, then do light irrigation before sowing. Especially in dry areas, it is very important to do light irrigation so that the seeds get the necessary moisture to germinate.
Irrigation Management
Proper irrigation management is also necessary after good germination of mustard seeds. The first irrigation should be done 25-30 days after sowing, when the plants start growing. After this, do the second and third irrigation at an interval of 15-20 days.
Irrigation at the time of flowering and pod formation is very important, because lack of moisture at this time can have a bad effect on production. Keep in mind that mustard crop does not require more than four irrigations, otherwise waterlogging can damage the crop.
Conclusion
If initial management with mustard seed is done properly, then germination is good and better production is obtained from the crop. Soil selection, field preparation, seed treatment, sowing time and irrigation management – it is important to pay attention to all these points. Proper management not only makes the plants strong, but the farmer also gets the full fruits of his hard work. Therefore, if you also want a good crop of mustard, then do not be negligent in initial management.
