World’s First Genetically Modified Horses: The world’s first genetically modified horses that can beat Polo Purezza
Genetically Modified Horses: Argentine scientists have developed the world’s first genetically modified horses. Biotech company Kheiron has developed these horses.
Genetically modified horses are not only capable of running fast, but can also beat the female mare Polo Purezza, who was the champion in the world of polo.
The genetically modified horses were born in October and November last year 2024. Scientists used CRISPR-Cas9 Gene-Editing Technology to make changes in their genes, which increased their muscle structure and speed capacity.
How Were ‘Super-Fast’ Horses Created?
According to media reports, Gabriel Vichera, co-founder and scientific director of Kheiron, said that his team changed the genome of the horses with the help of “genetic scissors” (CRISPR). In this technology, scientists can cut out specific parts of DNA and change them.
Vichera says that he made changes in the speed genes of Polo Purezza Mare. Then these genes were inserted into five horses to improve their performance. This process increased the capacity of the muscle fibers of the horses, due to which they started running very fast.
Is This ‘Generic Doping’?
Some people may have a question in their minds whether this is genetic doping? But Vichera clarified that this is not a fake method.
He said, we are using natural gene sequences, just inserting them in a precise manner. This is completely legal according to the rules of Argentina.
Not Just Horses, Now Pigs And Cows Will Also Be ‘Designers’!
Kheiron’s team is not limited to horses only. They are working on many other projects to revolutionize the animal world, such as:
Pigs That Donate Organs To Humans
Scientists are developing pigs whose organs can be transplanted into humans. This will help in overcoming the shortage of organ donation.
High Protein Cows
By changing the genes of some cows, the amount of protein in their milk is being increased.
Along with this, heat-tolerant cows are also being prepared, so that the effect of climate change is reduced.
What Changes Will Gene Editing Bring In The Future?
This research will not only change the world of polo and racing, but will also open new doors in medical science and agriculture.
Sports world: Genetic engineering will make horse racing and polo horses even faster.
Medical field: Animal organs will be available to humans, which will bring a revolution in organ transplantation.
Agriculture: More milk-yielding cows and disease-resistant animals will be developed.
What the Argentine scientists have done is a big step in science. If this technology is successful, then designer animals can become a part of our world in the future. Only time will tell whether this will be a boon or a challenge for humanity.
