Can an AI WhatsApp Adviser Help Oilseed Farmers Make Better Crop Decisions?

0

Farmers growing groundnut, soybean, mustard and other oilseed crops can now access research-based advice through a WhatsApp-based AI service. Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra was developed by ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research and partner institutes to provide crop guidance in Indian languages.

The service was introduced as a 24-hour advisory platform during the 2026 kharif season. Instead of depending entirely on physical visits to agricultural offices or experts, farmers can use their mobile phones to seek information about oilseed cultivation and related crop problems.

The system is designed around research-based information rather than general internet answers. ICAR-IIOR says the service provides guidance in all Indian languages, which could make technical agricultural information easier to access for farmers who prefer communicating in their local language.

What Can Farmers Ask?

Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra is aimed at farmers who need timely information during different stages of cultivation. Advisory services can help farmers understand crop management, pest and disease concerns, nutrient requirements and other production decisions that may affect yield and farm costs.

Timing matters in oilseed cultivation. A farmer facing an emerging pest problem may need advice quickly rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit from an extension worker. A mobile advisory can provide an additional source of information when farmers have access to a phone and network.

The platform is also part of a wider push to increase domestic oilseed production. India has been trying to reduce dependence on imported edible oils, making better production practices and improved access to farm advice important for growers of oilseed crops.

For farmers, the main advantage is convenience. A mobile-based service can be used from the field, at home or during other farm activities. It can also help farmers access information without travelling long distances simply to ask a routine crop-management question.

Why AI Could Matter For Oilseeds

AI can process a large amount of agricultural information and return guidance based on a farmer’s question. But its usefulness depends on the quality of the information behind the system. Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra is linked to ICAR-IIOR and partner research institutes, giving the platform a scientific advisory base.

This is important because farmers often encounter conflicting advice about pesticides, fertilisers and crop practices online. A research-backed platform can provide information based on recommendations developed by agricultural scientists rather than relying on unverified social media posts or commercial claims.

The technology can also support farmers who need information between formal extension activities. India’s agricultural extension network includes KVKs, state departments and agricultural universities, but physical outreach cannot always reach every farmer at the exact moment advice is needed.

Still, AI should not replace field-based agricultural advice. Crop problems can depend on soil type, weather, irrigation, variety and pest intensity. When a problem is severe or unusual, farmers should confirm the recommendation with a KVK, agricultural scientist or local agriculture department.

What Farmers Should Keep In Mind

Farmers using digital advisories should provide accurate information when asking questions. Details such as crop, variety, growth stage, symptoms, irrigation conditions and recent weather can influence the advice. Vague questions may produce less useful answers, especially when the problem requires a diagnosis.

Farmers should also avoid treating every digital recommendation as an instruction to immediately purchase an input. If a platform suggests a pesticide or nutrient treatment, users should check the recommended product, dose, safety instructions and approval status before application.

The service can be particularly useful for oilseed farmers because production decisions often involve several risks during a single season. Weather changes, pest attacks, nutrient deficiencies and disease can affect yields. Faster access to reliable information may help farmers respond before a small problem becomes a larger loss.

Oilseeds Kisaan Mitra shows how agricultural technology is moving beyond websites and mobile applications. A WhatsApp-based service works through a platform many farmers already use, reducing the need to learn a separate digital system before seeking agricultural information.

The larger test will be whether farmers continue using the service and whether its advice improves decisions in real fields. Technology becomes useful only when farmers can access it easily, understand the information and apply recommendations suited to their crops and local conditions.

For oilseed growers, the platform offers another source of scientific guidance at a time when India is trying to increase domestic oilseed production. It should be used alongside KVKs, agricultural departments and scientists, not as a replacement for local field-level expertise.
