PM-KISAN Continues Till 2031: What Will Farmers Get?
The Union Cabinet has approved continuation of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) from 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a total financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore. The scheme will continue providing direct income support to eligible landholding farmer families through bank-linked transfers.
Under PM-KISAN, eligible farmer families receive ₹6,000 every year in three equal instalments. The money is transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer. The scheme was launched in February 2019 and has become one of the government’s main income-support programmes for farmers.
The latest Cabinet decision does not change the annual support amount. Instead, it extends the scheme for another five years and provides the funding required to continue payments. For farmers already receiving the benefit, this means the programme will remain available through the 2030-31 financial year.
Why Direct Payments Matter
The scheme is designed to provide predictable cash support that farmers can use according to their needs. This can include buying seeds, fertilisers or other farm inputs, meeting seasonal expenses, or supporting household requirements when agricultural income is uneven during the year.
The government says PM-KISAN uses DBT to improve transparency and reduce the role of intermediaries. Money is transferred directly to eligible farmers’ accounts, making bank details and beneficiary verification important parts of receiving payments under the scheme.
The 23rd instalment, released in June 2026, transferred more than ₹18,880 crore to around 9.44 crore eligible farmers. More than 2.18 crore women farmers were included in that instalment, showing the scale of the programme across farming households.
For farmers, maintaining accurate records remains important. Changes in land ownership, bank accounts or other beneficiary details can affect payment processing. Farmers should check their PM-KISAN records through official government channels and complete any required verification rather than depending on unofficial agents.
What Farmers Should Check
Farmers who believe they are eligible should first check whether their name appears in the official beneficiary records. They should also make sure their bank account details are correct and that required identity verification has been completed wherever applicable before expecting future instalments.
The extension also means farmers can plan with greater certainty around the continuation of this support. But ₹6,000 a year should be treated as supplementary assistance, not as a replacement for farm income. Production costs, market prices, weather risks and crop losses still require separate planning.
The government’s wider agriculture programmes are also being linked with income support, crop insurance, credit, soil management and access to technology. Recent national campaigns have stressed soil testing, balanced fertiliser use, crop diversification, water conservation and residue management alongside existing farmer-support programmes.
The continuation of PM-KISAN comes as farmers face rising input costs and greater weather uncertainty. Direct support can provide some flexibility during difficult seasons, especially for small landholding families. But its usefulness depends on timely payments, accurate beneficiary records and farmers knowing how to access the scheme.
Farmers should therefore check their payment status regularly through official channels and keep bank and land records updated. If a payment is delayed or stopped, they should use the official grievance and verification systems instead of paying private agents who promise to release the money.
The five-year extension gives PM-KISAN a longer policy horizon, but the scheme’s impact will depend on how effectively benefits reach eligible farmers. For cultivators, the immediate takeaway is simple: the ₹6,000 annual support continues, and eligible farmers should keep their records and verification details current.
