In Andaman and Nicobar, indigenous poultry farming is considered a profitable business in terms of the sale of eggs and meat. Here, most of the people keep indigenous chickens at the back of their house. However, the villagers faced problems due to lack of sufficient availability of chicks to carry forward the poultry business. To solve this, ICAR suggested increasing the availability of rural chicks to farmers with the help of mini incubators or hatcheries.

Women do the entire management of the poultry business

Poultry farming is a good source of income for women in Andaman and Nicobar. Here, the entire management of this business is done by women. In Andaman, about 75 percent of the farmer families raise 6-12 chickens behind their house. 40 to 80 eggs are obtained per hen every year. He uses 31 percent of these eggs himself and sells up to 57 percent. In addition, 12 percent of the eggs are used for hatching. To address the problem of shortage of chicks, the Port Blair-based ICAR- Central Island Agricultural Research Institute has recommended the use of mini incubators – or hatchers – under the mission ‘Farmers for Farmers’, which will increase the production and supply of chicks.
