Promoting women entrepreneurship in the field of Agriculture by adopting 3 modules

An average increase by 133 percent in source of income and strengthen the Agri-Entrepreneurial approach.

A study has been conducted in  two villages of Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The study is funded by ICAR – NASF project. For this 40 farm women have been adopted in Sankilo and Tebtalpur, Cuttack district of Odisha. By using SHEET ( Social- Health – Environmental- Economic-Technological) module, critical gender gap indicators were identified and prioritized in first year.

On the basis of identified critical gender gap indicators, three modules have been made. Here interventions were provided and field trials were conducted. The three modules are

  1. Livelihood enhancement model for the small and marginal women farmers,
  2. Nutritional security model for medium income group women farmers and
  3. Entrepreneurship promotion model for big women farmers through institute–industry–stakeholders linkages.

The average gross return and net return has shown a good increase, under the livelihood enhancement model. The gross return increased from RS 1,16,923 to Rs 3,15,005 and net return from Rs 50,107 to Rs 1,89,995 per annum in demonstration of vegetables. Not only this, a yield advantage of about 45.51-68.93% and incremental income of 155-203% has been obtained.

A yield advantage of about 47.85-49.52 % with an incremental income of 69.74-119.30% has resulted in high yielding fruit crops.

With the Nutri-farm trial, a lot of awareness towards nutrition and consumption of nutri-rich vegetables and fruits has been generated among the women group under the Nutritional Security Model.

High protein Rice Variety satisfy the Zinc requirement of farm families

In the case of rice production, the rice variety of CR-Dhan 312 has shown an average highest yield of 6.68t/ha with highest benefit cost ratio of 2.50. An average net return of Rs 1,13,000 and gross return of Rs 1,26,290 per ha were obtained, as well as a yield advantage of 64.40% and increase in net return of 145.26% were also obtained.

The high protein rice varieties CR Dhan 311 (Mukul) and CR Dhan 315 added an additional protein yield to the diet of farm families by 3.26 and 3.30q/ha. It also helps in satisfying the zinc requirement (20-2ppm) of the farm families.

Farm income from Black Gram increases by 84.74%

An increase of 63.08% in yield and 29.687/- net return per annum has been recorded with an average yield of 1.28t/ha in black gram.The black gram increased the farm income by 84.74% with the jump of cost ratio from 1.68 to 2.42. Black gram also satisfies the protein requirement of the farm women.

A total yield of 971.1 kg of paddy straw mushroom has been generated in the Entrepreneurship Promotion Model. The total income generated in this model is 1,74,798/- out of which a value of RS 17,479/- of mushrooms has used for household consumption and RS 1,57,649/- of mushroom sold in open market and the average net return is RS 26,040/100 beds. An advantage of 54.99% in yield has been recorded with cost ratio increased from 2.06 to 4.21.

After intervention of the project, the source of income has increased by 133 percent on an average.

A spectacle of farm tools which reduces the women friendly grinding, were conducted to improve work efficacy and output. This demonstration also reduces drudgery and health hazard of the farm women.

These models have generated profits and also helps in bringing equity, promote entrepreneurship and empower farm women in the field of agriculture.
