Anil Kumar Sharma of Jhansi converted the roof of the house into a garden to fulfill his childhood hobby and has planted many types of flowers in 700 pots here. Which includes 150 varieties of roses alone (150 Rose Varieties).

Anil Sharma, who works in the railways, talked in detail with Kisan of India correspondent Sarvesh Bundeli about how he manages his job and his huge garden all by himself.

Flowers in pots on the roof of the house 

Every person has some hobby or the other, but due to the busyness of life, people often forget their hobbies or are unable to give time to them. But Anil Kumar Sharma of Jhansi presents an example in front of such people, who is fulfilling his childhood hobby of gardening along with his job in the railways.

He is fulfilling it to such an extent that the people of the neighbourhood have also become his admirers and some have even been inspired by him. Anil Sharma recollects that he has been fond of gardening since the age of 12 and to fulfill this hobby, he started planting flowers in pots on the roof of the house.

Flower cultivation in 700 pots on the roof 

Anil Sharma says that there are about 700 pots on his roof, in which many types of flowers are planted along with roses and marigolds. He also has flowers like Petunia, Geranium, Pansy, Impatiens, Alenium. 

150 Rose Varieties 

Many people like roses, so rose plants are often seen on people’s balcony or roof, but usually people plant only 2-3 varieties of it. You will be surprised to know that Anil Sharma has 150 varieties of roses and the special thing is that he is growing it not for commercial purposes, but only for hobby. Anil Sharma says that he started collecting rose varieties 5 years ago and currently he has 150 varieties of it and he also knows the names of all of them. Growing roses has been his hobby, so at present his entire focus is only on roses and his goal is to have 200 varieties of it.

Rose Varieties For Terrace Gardening 

Anil Sharma says that he has many varieties, some of which are indigenous varieties that people can easily grow at home. Whereas, to grow foreign varieties, a special temperature has to be maintained and some chemicals also have to be used. Therefore, their gardening is a bit difficult. He says that rose varieties like Great Scott, Black Bakara, Tinki in White can be easily planted in the garden of the house.

Caring for plants on the roof of the house 

Along with his job, Anil Kumar Sharma takes care of his 700 pots himself. He has not hired any gardener for this. He says that to take care of the plants, he wakes up every day at 4 am and till 9 am, he takes care of the plants. Anil takes care of them like a child. When a plant flowers, it gives a lot of happiness to see it. Along with flowers, Anil Sharma has also planted strawberries on the edge of the roof and has also grown green chillies for home use, he likes to experiment.

Orders plants online 

Anil Sharma orders different varieties of roses and other flower plants online. He says that he orders plants online from Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune, which reach him in about 4 days. The roots of these plants come washed in water. In such a situation, if planted directly in the soil, the plants can get damaged. That is why he plants them in cinder. Cinder is burnt coal which is also called khangar. Plants grow well when planted in it and they do not get damaged. He says that he orders cinder from Orissa, because it is not available anywhere else.

What things should be kept in mind in terrace gardening? 

Often people bring plants from the nursery, but the plants start dying within a few days. Because people do not know how much water to pour in the plants. Anil Sharma says that proper water management is most important for the growth of plants. If water is accumulating in the pot, the plant will rot.

Always keep in mind that water should not accumulate, the soil of the pot should be such that the water can drain out. For this, keep in mind that the soil of the pot should be soft. If it hardens, dig it from the edge. Along with this, while preparing the soil, mix gravel and clinker in it.

Gardening on the roof: Has received many awards 

For the passion with which Anil Sharma is fulfilling his hobby of flowers, he has received many awards in Jhansi. Now he wants to take his plants to exhibitions in Bhopal and Pune as well.

Inspired to plant trees on the roof of the house 

Anil Sharma says that after seeing him, about 20-25 people around also started planting trees on their houses. If such people come to him for any kind of help like where to get plants, fertilizers, then Anil Sharma helps them and tells them from where which thing can be ordered.
