Inspiring story of Nagendra Pratap Singh on Stepping into organic farming
Nagendra Pratap Singh, who hails from a small village Faridpur in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, has made his unique identity in the field of organic farming. Born on 23 July 1996, Nagendra has proved through his efforts that despite limited resources and land, farming can be turned into a profitable business.
Start of organic farming
Nagendra Pratap says, “Last year I started organic farming. There were challenges in the beginning, but now I feel that it was the right decision.” He does gardening and vegetable farming in his fields. He believes that chemical-free farming not only maintains the fertility of the soil, but also improves the quality of the products.
Innovation in farming
Various types of vegetables and fruits are grown in Nagendra’s farm. He says, “I have grown vegetables like carrots, peas, tomatoes and radish in my farm. Along with this, I have also planted guava and lemon plants.” To irrigate his crops, he prefers to use tube wells and drip irrigation techniques, which save water and ensure that the crops get adequate moisture on time.
Need for drip irrigation
Nagendra says that he felt the need to adopt drip irrigation as it reduces water consumption and irrigates more effectively. “Drip irrigation will not only make irrigation easier but will also increase the productivity of my crops,” he says.
Advantage of chemical-free farming
Nagendra has started using organic manure, vermicompost and neem-based pesticides. “Chemical-free farming improves soil quality and also improves the taste of vegetables and fruits,” he says. He has completely stopped using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in his fields.
Success in the market
Nagendra sells his produce in local markets. The growing demand for his organic crops has increased his income. He says, “Consumers have now become more health conscious and are preferring organic products. This is a big opportunity for farmers like me.”
Facing challenges
Nagendra faced many challenges in his journey of organic farming. He says, “Initially, it was difficult to prepare organic manure and use natural methods for pest control. But with time I found solutions to these challenges.”
Government initiatives and assistance
Although Nagendra has not availed any government scheme so far, he expects the government to run more schemes to promote organic farming. “If I get subsidy for drip irrigation and tube well, my cost of farming will reduce and production will increase,” he says.
Future plans
Nagendra aims to equip his farms with more modern technologies. He says, “I plan to use solar energy in my farm and set up a processing unit for organic products. This will not only increase my income but will also inspire other farmers.”
Initiative to involve youth in farming
Nagendra Pratap Singh believes that it is important to involve youth in farming to make it profitable. He says, “If the new generation uses modern techniques in farming, then this business will not only be profitable, but it will also be beneficial for the environment.”
Contribution to rural economy
Nagendra’s initiative has also attracted other farmers of his village towards organic farming. He said, “Now many farmers of my village come to me to get information about organic farming. I feel proud to see that other people are also getting inspired by my efforts.”
Nagendra Pratap Singh’s contribution to organic farming reflects his hard work, dedication and his approach towards innovation. His story is an inspiration for all those farmers who want to make their farming better and more profitable. Organic farming is not only beneficial for the environment, but it is also an effective means of increasing the income of farmers. Nagendra’s success proves that with the right approach and hard work, any farmer can turn his farming into a successful business.
