Vegetables Nursery: Nurseries have a special role in vegetable production because most of the vegetable seeds are not sown directly in the field, but first a nursery is prepared and then the saplings are planted in the field. The healthier the plant of the vegetable nursery, the better it is prepared, the better the production is likely to be. That is why preparing vegetable nursery scientifically is of special importance.
Scientific method of making vegetable nursery
There is a scientific method of sowing any crop, if the farmer follows that method and cultivates by adopting that scientific technique, then the chances of getting good production from the crop increases. The production of vegetable crops also depends on how well the nursery of that crop is prepared and how well the plant is prepared.
If care is not taken while setting up a nursery for vegetable cultivation, the risk of diseases like root rot increases, due to which 70 to 80 percent of the plants are destroyed. To get rid of this, it is very important for us to prepare the plants through scientific methods.
Field and field preparation for nursery
For vegetable nursery, light sandy loam or loamy soil with good drainage should be chosen. The pH value should be between 6.5 – 7.5. The field should be plowed deeply once or twice, so that the soil becomes brown and the harmful insects living in the field are destroyed.
2 kg of rotten cow dung manure per square meter or 500 grams of earthworm manure should be mixed well in the soil of the field. If the soil of the nursery is hard, then 2-3 kg of sand should be mixed in the soil at the rate of per square meter. Care should be taken that there should be no weeds in the nursery land.
Nursery beds are made 5-6 meters long and 1 meter wide at a height of 15-30 cm from the ground, so that weeding can be done easily. Also, organic medicine like Pseudomonas fluorescens and Aspergillus niger at the rate of 10 to 25 grams per square meter or chemical medicine Captan or Thiram at the rate of 5 grams per square meter should be mixed well in the soil of the beds and then the seeds should be sown.
Method of sowing seeds in vegetable nursery
Before sowing seeds in the nursery, it is necessary to treat them with medicine. For this:
Bavistine – Mix 2.5 grams in 1 kg of seeds.
Captan or Thiram – Mix 3 grams in 1 kg of seeds.
Seeds should be sown in the nursery only after mixing them well.
Farmers do sowing both ways, by sprinkling method and in rows. When sowing is done by broadcasting method, many seeds fall at one place. This makes the plants thin and light and production may decrease. Therefore, while sowing by broadcasting method, care should be taken that more than one seed should not fall at one place. Sow the seeds at a distance of 1-1 cm.
Sowing seeds in rows in vegetable nursery is considered the best method. For this:
Prepare the bed – Make 0.5 cm deep lines at a distance of 5 cm according to the width of the bed.
Sowing seeds – Sow seeds at a distance of 1-1 cm in these lines.
Cover the seeds – Cover the seeds lightly with a mixture of compost, soil and sand (2:1:1).
Cover for protection – Cover the bed with straw, grass or reeds, so that moisture is maintained and the plants become disease free and strong.
Time of germination after sowing seeds
After sowing seeds, light irrigation should be done with the help of sprinklers. When the shoots (first small sprouts emerging from the seed) emerge, then the reeds, straw or other covering material should be removed.
While irrigating, keep in mind that water should not remain stagnant in the bed for a long time, so that the plants can develop properly. The Indian Vegetable Research Institute has given the time of germination of some seeds-
Name of vegetable | Time of germination (DAS) |
Cauliflower vegetables | 3-4 |
Brinjal | 5-6 |
Tomato | 6-7 |
Chilli | 7-8 |
Onion | 7-10 |
