Weed Control: Weeds are those plants which grow automatically along with the main crop without being sown. They affect the quality of the main crop as well as its growth. Weeds are a serious problem, so its prevention is very important.
In such a situation, weeds can be controlled by using natural methods so that along with saving the environment, people also get nutritious grains. Weeds can be controlled in many ways in organic method, which includes the use of microorganisms to plant extracts.
Use of microorganisms
At present, farmers have many microorganisms available with them to control weeds, such as fungi, parasites, soil-borne fungal pathogens, bacteria, nematodes, etc.
Rust fungus, also known as Puccinia canaliculata, causes leaf disease. This microorganism controls a weed called yellow walnut (Cyperus esculentus).
Using the soil-borne fungus Trichoderma virens, it is helpful in preventing the growth and emergence of wild spinach in crops.
Using Alternaria conjuncta and Fusarium tricinctum, weed can be prevented from growing.
Use of natural products
Agricultural by-products
Dry distillers grains (soluble dry distillers grains) – This is a by-product of ethanol production, which is used as animal feed. It has a high amount of nitrogen which makes it very effective in weed control, it is also used as a fertilizer in horticultural crops.
Glucosinolates – Glucosinolates is an allelopathic compound found in Brassicaceae plant, which forms toxic substances by aqueous analysis of myrosinase enzyme and helps in preventing weeds.
Use of plant extracts
Extracts obtained from different parts of plants such as root, stem and seed are used to control weeds naturally. Some plants contain phyto-toxic allelochemicals, which help in preventing the germination and growth of weeds.
These weeds can be controlled by plant extracts-
Extracts of lettuce (Lettuce sativa), small dhatura (Xanthium occidentale) and Japanese thistle (Chrysium japonicum) help in preventing the growth of weed roots.
Aqueous extract of fresh leaves of Mahaneem (Alianthus altissima) helps in preventing the growth of weed roots.
Mix Chinese arbi (Alocasia cusculata), oleander (Nerium oleander), Krishna kamal bel (Passiflora incarnate) and Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japanica) and make powder and spray it at the rate of 1.5 tonnes per hectare. This can prevent weeds in paddy cultivation by 60-70 percent.
Weed control through essential oils/fats
Essential oils of oregano, basil, maruwa (Origanum majorana), lemon and basil (Ocimum citriodorum) are used for controlling amaranth (Amaranthus spp.).
Essential oils of lawson cypress (Lawson cypress), myrtle (Rosmarinus officinalis), white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and eucalyptus are used for controlling amaranth and knapweed.
Essential oils from red oregano, summer herb, cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), cloves are used for controlling weeds like bathua, ragweed, Johnson grass.
Advantages of using organic products
They harm only the weeds and not the main crop.
They do not stay in the soil for long and do not enter the ground water.
Are quickly decomposed in the environment.
