Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana to increase income in agriculture

Install solar pump with only 10% private capital, 60% subsidy and 30% loan facility from bank

Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana | The use of diesel or electric-powered pumping sets for irrigation significantly increases the cost of cultivation. In such a situation, pumping sets powered by solar energy are no less than a boon for the farmers because capital investment has to be made only once in pumping sets powered by solar energy. After this, the worry of regularly buying diesel or paying electricity bills ends. Not only this, but the electricity generated from solar energy also increases the country’s total electricity production.

Importance of Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana

Considering these facts, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRI) has started the Kusum scheme. Kusum or Pradhan Mantri Kisan Suraksha Abhiyan was announced in March 2019. But its guidelines were released in July 2019. Through this, farmers are encouraged to install solar pumps by giving 60% subsidy or financial assistance.

Farmers across the country can take advantage of the Kusum scheme. In its first phase, a target has been set to run 17.5 lakh diesel-run pumping sets with solar energy. Presently, Kusum Yojana is becoming very popular among the farmers of Rajasthan. More and more farmers are coming forward to take advantage of it because the groundwater level is very low in most areas of Rajasthan.

Irrigation with diesel or electric pumping sets becomes more expensive in Rajasthan because of its groundwater level. This increases the cost of cultivation and reduces farmers’ profit from the market. Because in the market, prices are usually determined by the rules of demand and supply of any produce. In this, those farmers are in relatively better condition, with less crop cost.

The attractive aspect of Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana

Another attractive aspect of the Kusum Yojana is that farmers can set up solar energy production plants on their land through this. The power generated from the plant can also be sold to nearby farmers or directly to power distribution companies. By doing this, the farmer or landowner who sets up the plant can earn from Rs.60,000 to Rs.1 lakh annually. This can be very helpful in paying off the bank loan.

60% Subsidy on Solar Pumping Set

Under the Kusum Yojana, farmers get 60% subsidy on the cost of installing solar panels. The remaining 30 percent loan can be obtained from the bank, and the farmer has to arrange only 10 percent capital on his own. Under the Kusum scheme, a pumping station of 3 to 7.5 horse power (HP) can be installed. For this, the farmer has to pay the demand amount according to the power of the pump. For example,

Pumping set power – Demand amount (Rs.)

3HP – 20,549

5HP – 33,749

7.5HP – 46,687
