Uttarakhand farmer Amba Dutt Pandey was about to leave farming, increased area due to use of LDPE and solved the problem
Adopted four polyhouses and crop rotation
Uttarakhand farmer Amba Dutt Pandey was badly affected by the water shortage. Farming was becoming difficult for Amba Dutt Pandey, a resident of Almora. Due to non availability of water, the area under crops was decreasing. They did not have water for irrigation even for 0.2-hectare area. He was worried about the continuous loss in agriculture. He even thought of quitting farming. In the meantime, he came to know that an officer of the Vivekananda Hill Agricultural Research Institute was coming to visit his village, Bhagartola.

Water scarcity was the biggest problemÂ
Amba Dutt Pandey told the officers about his problem. After this the officer visited the affected area. He saw natural perennial springs near Amba Dutt’s farm. That is, such springs in which water remains for 12 months of the year. The officer told them the method of using this water. Harvesting water from these springs in tanks made of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) will solve the problems of irrigation. In this way Amba Dutt Pandey found a long term solution.
Adopted four polyhouses and crop rotationÂ
Amba Dutt also got successful results of this technique. He got four polyhouses constructed for the cultivation of off-season vegetables. To maintain soil fertility and to protect the crop from diseases and pests, crop rotation is adopted. Along with training, funding was also given to him for all these things. This boosted his morale and today he is a successful farmer in his area.
50 thousand litres of water is availableÂ
This was the beginning of a new journey for Amba Dutt. 50 thousand litres of water was made available through water harvesting in LDPE tanks. He started taking loan facility from banks through Kisan Credit Card Scheme. He also collected information about the prices of vegetables in nearby cities so that they can fix the right price for their crops.
