India’s Fortified Rice Finds Global Buyers, Here’s Why It Matters
India has shipped its first batch of Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica, marking a major step in strengthening global nutrition and expanding agricultural exports.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry confirmed the export on Tuesday, calling it a milestone in India’s food fortification efforts. The 12-metric-tonne shipment was coordinated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission to fight malnutrition and expand India’s presence in global food markets.
“The first consignment of 12 MT of Fortified Rice Kernel from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica strengthens both our nutrition mission and foreign trade,” Goyal said on X.
He added that the initiative will help farmers, millers, and exporters access new markets and secure better prices for their products.
According to the Ministry, Chhattisgarh has been actively promoting rice exports, helping local producers gain international recognition. The successful shipment highlights the state’s growing role in supplying nutrition-rich food globally.
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev praised the effort, saying it showcases India’s science-based approach to tackling malnutrition and expanding its agri-export portfolio.
Fortified Rice Kernel is made by mixing rice flour with micronutrients like iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. The fortified grains are blended with regular rice to boost its nutritional value.
Officials said the export strengthens India’s position as a reliable supplier of high-quality, nutrition-enriched food and reflects the country’s growing focus on sustainable agri-trade.
