Revolution in Cotton Farming: A major meeting took place in Coimbatore on 11 July 2025, bringing together cotton-producing farmers from across India, agricultural scientists, and senior government leaders. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, and Haryana Agriculture Minister Rana Singh attended the event. The main focus was to find practical ways to boost cotton production, reduce cultivation costs, and introduce modern technology in farming.

During the session, farmers shared the difficulties they face in growing cotton. They spoke about the lack of access to quality seeds, limited water supply, rising pesticide costs, and unstable weather conditions. Many of them urged the government to provide better seed varieties, improve irrigation facilities, and make new farming technologies affordable and accessible. Their key concern was ensuring higher returns from cotton cultivation without increasing the input burden.

Farmers Shared Their Problems

Farmers raised key issues:

  • Poor access to quality seeds
  • Lack of water
  • High cost of pesticides
  • Unpredictable weather

They asked for:

  • Better seeds
  • Improved irrigation
  • Affordable technology

Revolution in Cotton Farming

After hearing the farmers, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced a new approach. He introduced the slogan, “One Nation, One Agriculture, One Team.” This idea emphasizes teamwork among the government, scientists, and farmers to achieve common goals. He assured farmers that all future cotton farming strategies would keep their needs at the center. He also called on seed companies to develop improved seeds at reasonable prices.

Chouhan stressed the importance of mechanization in farming, especially for small and marginal farmers. He announced that the government would set up a machine testing center in South India, a move that will help farmers in the region test equipment without having to travel far. This center will support farmers with timely and relevant machine solutions for cotton cultivation.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government will work closely with farmers and scientists. His slogan was: “One Nation, One Agriculture, One Team.”

He announced:

  • A joint roadmap for cotton farming
  • Focus on affordable, high-quality seeds
  • Stronger weed management
  • Greater use of machines for small farmers

Chouhan also announced a machine testing centre in South India, ending the need to travel far for equipment testing.

Target: Self-Reliant Cotton Production

The government plans to:

  • Make India self-sufficient in cotton
  • End imports and boost exports
  • Promote High Density farming
  • Release only field-proven seed varieties through ICAR
  • Set up a dedicated Cotton Task Force to track progress

What’s Next? The Strategy Ahead

  • Better seeds: ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute and others will develop high-yield cotton varieties
  • Lower pesticide use: Focus on organic farming and Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Smart tech: Use drones and sensors to improve field monitoring
  • Farmer training: Agricultural science centers will teach new methods

Moving Towards a Cotton Revolution

This meeting gave farmers a voice and set clear goals. If plans are followed well:

  • India could become the top cotton producer
  • Farmer incomes could rise significantly

The direct link between farmers, scientists, and the government is a major step forward.
