Have you ever thought that apple cultivation can be done in plain areas? Yes, now it is true! Apple cultivation is no longer limited to hilly areas only. Foreign scientists have created some apple varieties that can grow well even in hot areas. But till now we did not know much about them because they were not tested in the hot climate of India.
The good news is that the Indian Agricultural Research Institute has tested these varieties in the weather here. They found that some apple varieties require very little cold. These varieties can bear fruit even in just 250-300 hours of cold. This discovery has proved that apple cultivation can be done not only in cold areas but also in plains and hot areas. This is a new opportunity for farmers. Now they can bring new changes in their farming and earn good money by growing apples.
New varieties of apples
1. Anna: Anna is a special variety for apple cultivation in plain areas which grows well even in hot weather and ripens quickly. Its fruits are ready in June itself. The fruits look like Golden Delicious and can be kept for about a week. Some other varieties of trees should also be planted along with Anna apple trees, such as Darsett Golden. This helps in good pollination of flowers and produces more fruits.
2. Darset Golden: Darset Golden is also a special variety made for hot areas. It also requires very little cold. Which is only 250-300 hours. If you are growing Anna apples, then out of every 100 trees, plant 20 trees of Darset Golden. This will result in more fruits on Anna trees. Apart from these, there are many other varieties of apple cultivation in plain areas which can be grown, such as HR MN-99, In Shamer, Michael, Beverly Hills, Parlins Beauty, Tropical Beauty, Petegil and Tamma etc.
Preparations and information for planting saplings
Before starting apple cultivation in plain areas, farmers should keep some important things in mind. Like buy saplings only from government or recognized nurseries. The pH of the soil should be between 6-7 and there should be no waterlogging in the ground. Plant the plants at a distance of 5×5 or 6×6 meters and use 15 kg of rotten manure for each plant. While planting the plants, keep in mind that the joint of the rootstock and the scion should not be buried in the ground.
Most of the leaves of the plants fall between November and January. This is a natural process that helps the plants to bear the cold and bring flowers in the next season. So, farmers do not need to panic about it.
Protect plants from these insect diseases
It is important to protect apple plants from some insects and diseases. Spray dimethoate to protect them from hair caterpillars in August-September. There may be a problem of fruit rotting during the rains in July, for which carbendazim or thiophanate methyl can be sprayed. It would be best if the fruits are plucked before the rains.
