0

51-year-old Charanjit Singh, a resident of Karghatiya village in Udham Singh Nagar district, has become an example for the entire region. On his 25-acre farm, he not only grows traditional crops but also earns 25-30 lakh rupees annually through agroforestry, dairy, and vegetable production. Behind his success is his passion for adopting modern technologies and a desire to constantly experiment.

Holistic Farming: Harmony with Nature

Charanjit Singh has developed his farm into a self-supporting unit. You’ll find all kinds of activities going on simultaneously on his farm.

While a kitchen garden on 1 bigha of land provides fresh vegetables, several cows and buffaloes produce 10 to 15 liters of milk daily.

He earns an additional income of approximately ₹50,000 per month.

Crop Management: Fully Utilizing Every Inch of Land

1. The variety in Charanjeet’s (Progressive Farmer of Uttarakhand) farming is remarkable. He uses Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technology for paddy cultivation, which saves 40% of water.

2. He yields 22-25 quintals per acre from the 15 acres of paddy he cultivates.

3. He has achieved remarkable success in wheat cultivation—producing 28-30 quintals per acre. Pulse crops like mustard, peas, and lentils also generate good income.

Changing the traditional sowing time for crops has yielded millions of rupees.

The special thing is that he changed the traditional sowing time for lentils. While lentils are typically sown in October-November, Charanjit sowed them on January 11th and achieved a good yield of 1.10 quintals per acre.

Green Gold: Long-Term Income from Tree Plantation

Charanjit has planted 2,000 eucalyptus trees along his field boundaries, which will mature in 6-7 years. He expects to generate an income of ₹60-80 lakh from these.

He has also planted 50 mahogany trees, which will mature in 12-15 years and fetch a value of ₹50,000 to ₹100,000 per tree. This is a secure investment for his future. Mahogany wood is used for building construction and shipbuilding.

Water Conservation: Use Every Drop of Water

Charanjit has paid special attention to water conservation. By installing a sprinkler irrigation system on 10 acres, he has saved 50% of his water.

A drip irrigation system has been installed on his fields. This system helps with irrigation.

Economic Success: How does he earn so much?

A look at Charanjit’s various income sources reveals that he earns approximately ₹5 lakh from paddy, ₹9 lakh from wheat, ₹2 lakh from mustard, ₹2 lakh from peas, and ₹60,000 from lentils.

He earns an additional ₹3.6 lakh from dairy products and ₹1.2 lakh from his kitchen garden. Combined, his total annual income reaches ₹24-25 lakh. This is just accounting for his main income sources.

A Message to Stay Connected to the Soil

Charanjit Singh’s story proves that by adopting innovation and a scientific approach to farming, farmers can write a new chapter of prosperity.

Charanjit Singh believes that “people should break away from traditional thinking, learn new methods, and never shy away from hard work.”

His success has opened a new path for the farmers of the entire region.
