Ganesh Dutt started garlic cultivation in the hilly area, know from where did he get the seeds, what is the cost-profit?
Ganesh Dutt: There is a constant change in the field of agriculture in the country. The hard work of farmers is taking agriculture to new dimensions. In this sequence, Ganesh Dutt, a resident of Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, is cultivating garlic. Ganesh has been cultivating garlic for the last 10 years. Along with this, he is cultivating vegetables, fruits and wheat. In a conversation with Kisan of India, Ganesh Dutt shared many things related to garlic cultivation.
How did you start garlic cultivation?
Ganesh Dutt says that he started garlic cultivation in two biswas about 10 years ago. He further said that I started garlic cultivation by looking at other farmers. The profit from garlic cultivation became a source of inspiration for him. First, garlic was planted in two biswas. As the profit in its cultivation increased, the area of garlic cultivation increased. At present, garlic is planted in a field of two bighas.
What is the cost and profit in garlic cultivation?
Ganesh says that he uses two and a half to three quintals of seeds in a field of two bighas. The seeds come to us from Jammu. The price of seeds is Rs 165 per kilogram. Some fertilizers are spent. The cost of all this comes to around 25 thousand. In garlic cultivation, a profit of Rs 2 lakh is obtained in two bighas.
Which seeds are used in garlic cultivation?
The seeds should be of good quality, so that the farmers of the hilly area get benefit. While buying seeds, one should check them carefully. Garlic seeds should not be cut. Also, the seeds should not be rotten. Along with this, the farmer should use improved seeds.
What things should be kept in mind while growing garlic?
Garlic farming requires many types of care along with seeds. Ganesh grows garlic organically. He does not use chemical medicines.
The leaves of garlic plants become crooked. This disease affects garlic plants in the months of March-April. For its treatment, sour lassi is used. Sour lassi is sprayed every 15 to 20 days. If the disease affects more, then we use the sign medicine available in our block.
Organic fertilizer is used in garlic farming. He removes weeds from the field by weeding from time to time. Along with this, irrigation should also be done on time. This increases the chances of crop production.
The crop is damaged more by animals. Nets are used to protect them from animals.
Right time for sowing and harvesting garlic
When a new farmer comes into farming, there is a shortage of time. Ganesh told that garlic crop is sown in the months of November and December. Garlic is harvested in the month of June.
What are the means of irrigation in hilly areas for garlic cultivation?
Ganesh Dutt says that the biggest problem in hilly areas is water. We depend on rainwater. Stored water is used as an alternative to rainwater. Garlic cultivation requires irrigation every 15 days. Irrigation is also required once before harvesting.
Role of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in agriculture
Ganesh says that a lot of help is received from Block KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra). The scientists there help us. This makes it easier for us to do farming. Seeds of all vegetables are available in our block. We get the benefit of Kisan Credit Card. Organic fertilizer kits are available at the block level. Along with this, training was also given to make earthworm compost. Earthworms were also provided by the block.
Suitable soils for garlic cultivation
Ganesh says that farmers get good profit in garlic cultivation. His area has black soil. Garlic production is good in black soil. Garlic production is also good in red soil. Both soils are suitable for garlic.
Market for garlic cultivation
Ganesh Dutt says that garlic is sent to Solan market. Many times garlic is sold from home itself. There is no need to go to the market.

With attractive purple peeled bulbs, Bheem Purple has been cultivated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. It matures in 120-135 days and average yield is 6-7 t/ha.

VL Garlic 1 variety is white in colour. This variety can be used in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand. This variety ripens in 180-190 days. Its average production is 14-15 tonnes/hectare.

VL Garlic 2 variety is white in colour. This variety can be used in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand. This variety ripens in 190-200 days. Its average production is 14-16 tonnes/hectare.
Agrifound Parvati
Agrifound Parvati variety is purple in colour. This variety is cultivated in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, hills of Jammu and Kashmir and Sikkim. This variety ripens in 165-175 days. Its average yield is 17-18 tonnes/hectare.
Agrifound Parvati -2 (G-408)
Agrifound Parvati -2 (G-408) is white in colour. This variety is cultivated in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir hills and Sikkim. This variety gets ripe in 165-175 days. Its average yield is 17-22 tonnes/hectare.
