Government Plans to Take ICAR Technologies to 10 Crore Farmers, Tightens Crackdown on Fake Seeds
The Centre has announced a major push to bring agricultural innovations from laboratories to farmers’ fields. Speaking during the 98th Foundation Day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government aims to take ICAR-developed technologies to 10 crore farmers across the country. At the same time, he called for stronger laws to stop the sale of fake seeds and counterfeit pesticides, which continue to cause heavy losses for farmers.
Why the Government Is Focusing on Fake Inputs
Fake seeds and substandard pesticides have become a growing concern in several states. Farmers often spend an entire season cultivating crops, only to discover poor germination or crop failure because the inputs were not genuine.
The Agriculture Minister said stricter regulations are needed to protect farmers and ensure that only certified agricultural inputs reach the market. The government also wants stronger enforcement against companies selling counterfeit products.
ICAR develops improved crop varieties, livestock technologies, farm machinery and climate-resilient farming practices every year. However, many of these innovations do not reach farmers quickly.
To bridge this gap, the government plans to expand extension services so that ICAR technologies reach 10 crore farmers. The objective is to improve productivity, reduce cultivation costs and increase farm incomes through wider adoption of research-backed innovations.
The announcement came as ICAR celebrated its 98th Foundation Day.
The organisation remains India’s largest agricultural research network and continues to develop climate-resilient crop varieties, improved livestock breeds, sustainable farming practices and modern agricultural technologies. The government says scientific innovation will play a key role in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
