Groundnut Cultivation: Variety advanced for drought affected area, 21% Production Increase
Earlier farmers used to use the local variety, which resulted in 33% crop failure.
Groundnut is the main Kharif season crop of the farmers of the Tumkur district of Karnataka. Groundnut is cultivated on a large scale here. Farmers of Pavagadh taluk of Tumkur district have cultivated the local groundnut variety TMV-2 for many years. Pests and diseases are more prevalent in this variety. Therefore, the farmers of the area used to get less yield. About 33% of crop loss was due to leaf spots and minor diseases. In such a situation, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Hirehalli released an improved variety of groundnut K-6 to double the farmers’ income and reduce the loss.

Disease resistant with high-yield potential
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hirehalli, Tumkur, under National Mission on Oilseed and Oil Palm program (NMOOP), released a new and improved groundnut variety K-6 during the 2015-16 in Karikyathanahalli village of Pavagadh. This groundnut variety has been developed by the Agricultural Research Station, Kadri, Andhra Pradesh. This variety was found to be improved for groundnut cultivation.

Information of New variety to the Farmers
Front-line demonstrations were done to inform the farmers about the new variety. Just so you know – complete information was given about this. The farmers were excited by the results of the demonstration. The plants of the new variety were stronger than the first variety. The number of beans was more. A significant reduction in leaf spot and leaf minor disease was also observed.

Increase in Production
During this, an increase of up to 93 percent was observed in the number of plants. Also, the yield potential has increased by 21.70 percent compared to the local variety. The beneficiary farmers were very happy with this variety. Cultivating groundnut variety K-6 can increase the income by about 24,180 per hectare. Farmers growing this variety for the last few years are very satisfied. They get good quality fodder and more quantity of oil along with higher yield.
Producing Seeds
As part of the frontline demonstration, Thiperangappa, a farmer from Karikyathanahalli village, raised the K-6 groundnut on an acre of land in 2016-17. Due to this he got 5.3 quintal yield. He was very excited by such a high yield, even in the condition of drought. During the summer of 2017, he planted the same seed again and got a production of 24 quintals. He also provided improved variety seeds to 24 other farmers during Kharif 2018. In this way he started producing seeds every year. Till 2019-20, he has provided seeds to 89 farmers.
Now this variety has become popular in the whole district. It is in great demand among the farmers. Presently the new variety has replaced the local variety up to 22.50%. An improved variety of groundnut has given satisfaction to the farmers of Pavagadh taluk of Tumkur district through higher yield besides increasing their income.
