Dhirendra Kumar is a resident of Belwara village in Darbhanga district of Bihar state. He is a progressive farmer, who mainly cultivates Makhana and water chestnut. His village is located in the flood-affected area, where floods had to be faced every year. Due to floods, the farmers here were not able to cultivate with their traditional methods and the crops suffered heavy losses.

With his hard work and new thinking, Dhirendra continued agriculture successfully even during the floods. Thus, Dhirendra Kumar not only brought a change in his life by adopting innovation in agriculture, but also set an example for the farmers around him.
Dhirendra joined farming after completing his intermediate studies

Reasons for choosing makhana cultivation
Earlier, farmers in Dhirendra Kumar’s village mainly cultivated sugarcane, but due to the closure of sugar mills and frequent floods, sugarcane cultivation suffered heavy losses. In such a situation, Dhirendra adopted makhana cultivation, which proved to be an ideal option to deal with the problem of climate change and floods.
In 2019, he started cultivating makhana, and at the same time he started gathering information about the advantages and disadvantages of makhana cultivation. Gradually he started making progress in this field and today he has become a leading example of makhana cultivation.

At the same time, wheat, pulses, oilseeds and green fodder crops are also grown for cattle in the Rabi season, which also increases the fertility of the fields.
