Onion is one of the most widely grown vegetable crops in India. It is an essential ingredient in Indian kitchens and plays a major role in the country’s vegetable economy.
India is the second largest onion producer in the world after China.
According to the National Horticulture Board, India produced more than 31 million tonnes of onions in 2023–24.
The major onion-producing states include:
• Maharashtra
• Madhya Pradesh
• Karnataka
• Gujarat
• Rajasthan
Maharashtra alone contributes nearly one-third of the country’s onion production.
Seasonal Onion Crops
Onions are grown in three main seasons in India.
These include:
• Kharif crop (harvested in October–December)
• Late Kharif crop (harvested in January–March)
• Rabi crop (harvested in April–June)
The rabi onion crop is the most important because it has better storage quality and supplies markets for several months.
Challenges Faced by Farmers
Onion farming can be profitable, but farmers face several challenges.
These include:
• Sudden price fluctuations
• Weather damage from rain or heat
• Storage losses
• Pest attacks such as thrips
In some years, excess production leads to a sharp fall in market prices. Farmers sometimes sell onions below the cost of production.
For example, during the 2023 harvest season, wholesale prices in some markets dropped below ₹8 per kilogram.
Storage and Infrastructure
To reduce losses, farmers use traditional onion storage structures. These ventilated storage houses help onions remain fresh for several months.
However, experts say better cold storage facilities are needed to stabilise prices and reduce waste.
Government schemes have supported the construction of onion storage units in major producing states.
Growing Market Opportunities
Despite the challenges, onion farming remains an important income source for farmers.
India also exports onions to countries such as Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.
Improved storage, better transport networks and stable market policies can help farmers earn more from this important crop.
