Polyhouse Farming: The way of farming has completely changed now. Along with equipment and other techniques, farming is now done inside plastic sheds instead of in the open. This is called polyhouse. It is not affected by adverse weather outside. You can maintain the inside temperature according to your own. Also, there is less outbreak of insects inside it. Crops can be grown without using harmful pesticides. One of its advantages is that you can grow any crop in any season. Farmer Bheru Ram of Basedi village of Jaipur district also adopted this technique and got 10 times profit. Progressive farmer Bheru Ram spoke to Gaurav Manral, correspondent of Kisan of India.

Farming is done in less water

Bheru Ram says that due to scarcity of water in Basedi village, farmers first adopted drip and sprinkler method for irrigation. After this, polyhouse farming was adopted because it consumes less water and is more profitable. In open cultivation, there was hardly a profit of Rs 1 lakh in one acre, whereas in polyhouse, there is a profit of Rs 10 lakh in one acre. Also, two crops can be taken in a year. He says that the farmers of this village are very progressive. When any new technology comes, they adopt it immediately. A solar plant has also been installed here and a farm pond has also been constructed, in which rain water is collected.

How was farming before polyhouse?

Bheru Ram says that earlier there was not much problem of water, so wheat, peas, groundnut, guar, millet etc. were grown as the main crops. Then due to the problem of water, the way of farming also changed. Instead of traditional farming, vegetables from Thailand, Netherlands, cucumbers, tomatoes and other such vegetables are being grown in polyhouses. The returns from these crops are also high. He says that now hybrid seeds of all the crops have started coming, due to which more yield is obtained. Earlier, onion crop used to yield 60-70 quintals in one acre, but hybrid seeds yield up to 300 quintals.

Everyone benefits from polyhouse

Bheru Ram says that it is getting 10 times more profit than open farming. In such a situation, if everyone starts polyhouse farming, then the needs of the growing population can be met. The polyhouse changed his fortune, because it was impossible to make such a profit in open farming. He further says that he is very satisfied and happy by setting up the polyhouse. 20 thousand is available in one acre for open farming, whereas in polyhouse it is available for 2.5 lakh rupees and water is also very less in this. That’s why Bheru Ram believes that polyhouse farming is the best way.

Bheru Ram advises other farmers to do drip irrigation first and then make a profit and set up a green house/polyhouse. He believes that this will change the lives of the farmers.

Advantages of polyhouse

  • The effect of pest is also less and the quality of the crop is good.
  • The yield is 5 to 10 times higher.
  • In the cultivation of vegetables, fruits and flowers, up to 90% water is conserved and the shelf life of the produce is also increased.
  • The need for fertilizers is also less.
  • Ornamental plants can be grown well in it.
