Kalpana Marathe, a resident of Nagargaon in Sattari, Goa, is a successful entrepreneur today. Her family has been associated with agriculture for many years. His family owns 7.6 hectares of land, in which she grows a variety of fruits. These fruit orchards are called ‘Kula Ghar’ in the local language. He also cultivates jackfruit in the garden itself. There are 10 jackfruit trees in the garden. About 25 to 30 jackfruits are obtained from each tree. Each fruit weighs about 8 to 10 kg. Due to low demand for jackfruit in the surrounding market, most of the production was spoiled. There was also lack of information regarding value addition. The family members were worried due to the damage being done to the jackfruit produce. Meanwhile, in 2018 Kalpana contacted Krishi Vigyan Kendra of her district and inquired about the processing of jackfruit.

Jackfruit processing started 

Kalpana took part in the training related to jackfruit processing. Krishi Vigyan Kendra gave practical information about the method of making jackfruit chips and papad in Kalpana’s farm. It was during this time that she got interested in making jackfruit by-products. They started producing it domestically.

Worked on branding

Kalpana was told about the importance of branding of products by Krishi Vigyan Kendra. In addition, KVK helped Kalpana register the firm under FDA for FSSAI license so that they could sell their products through cooperative stores.

Get good price in the market

Kalpana made 32 kg jackfruit chips and 36 kg jackfruit papad in 2020. She sold a packet of 200 grams jackfruit chips for Rs 100 and a packet of 200 grams jackfruit papad for Rs 75. In this way, he earned about 12 thousand rupees from jackfruit chips and about 9 thousand rupees from jackfruit papad.

Apart from this, Kalpana also prepares Jackfruit Leather (a food item resembling aam papad). She sells it in the market at the rate of Rs 400 per kg. Due to this, she got direct profit of about 14 thousand rupees.

Seeing success of Kalpana, other women of her area have also started domestic production of jackfruit chips. Appreciating her achievements, the KVKs of the district have placed him among such farmers who are role models for the area.

Key things related to jackfruit cultivation 

Hot climate is considered suitable for the cultivation of jackfruit. Where there is not much rain and the weather is also hot, jackfruit cultivation gives good results in such areas. Jackfruit can be grown in both hot and humid climate. Jackfruit is also successfully cultivated in hilly and plateau areas.

Jackfruit cultivation is possible in all types of soil. Deep loamy soil is considered best for its cultivation, as the roots of jackfruit go deep enough. Along with this, it should have proper drainage system, as there is a possibility of death of the plant in case of waterlogging.
